They whispered to each other in the darkness of their bedroom when one of them slept over.
The hushed laughter and breathy chuckles, the serious talks, the embarrassing stories. They shared every part of themselves with each other. It was the atmosphere that engulfed them. It was in the safety of the bedroom that allowed them to be open.
"Let's run away." Kairi whispered.
Mattia let out a chuckle.
"No, no, I'm serious. Let's run away. We can go into the city and see shit. We can be free.."
Mattia furrowed his eyebrows as he watched the other ramble. He watched as Kairi tangled a story together and warmth erupted in his chest.
He loved this boy so much.
He shuffled closer to the older and pulled Kairi into his chest.
"Mattia, come on, for one day. Just one." Kairi mumbled thought it was muffled.
"Kairi, babe, I would love to run away with you but not now. We gotta plan this. How about we talk about it in the morning?"
Kairi let out an impatient whine but accepted it.
That's how it started.
When one or the other was sad or going through something they'd whisper the what if's.
What if we had children?
What if we spent a week together by ourselves?
What if we married?
What if the world was about to end where would you spend it?
What if we ran away together just for a day?
The questions never stopped and neither of them wanted it to. The questions may have been odd but it meant something to them. It reassured them when nothing else could.
"What if we ran away together just for a day?" Kairi whispered, tears gathering in his eyes as Mattia stared back.
Mattia cleared his throat to rid the fact that his eyes were watering too.
Mattia let out a watery chuckle.
"How about we talk about this in the morning?" He responded hoarsely.
But, there would be no morning for them.
Not when Mattia was moving.
Not when Kairi was staying.None of them voiced this as they held each other in the dark.
None of them voiced this as they cried.
Because, there would be no Mattia in the morning.
There would be packages and an empty house.
There would be car driving away.
There would be Kairi watching the car leave; watching it leave him behind.
Kairi nuzzled into Mattia's chest and sobbed.
He could feel his hair getting damp and he knew Mattia was crying too.He sobbed until he fell asleep.
Then, morning came.
The stolen hours of the night meant nothing to the day as they hugged and Kairi watched as half of his heart left.
Days passed.
Kairi spent them mourning what he had and Mattia spent them in his room watching the day move on without him.
Weeks passed.
Kairi spent them on his phone texting with his friend.
Mattia spent them texting who he once could claim as boyfriend.
A month passed and the ache didn't leave.
No matter who they met or what they did the ache in their heart mocked them.Their what if's were never used on anyone else.
Kairi let out a dry sob as he stared at the ceiling. It's been so long since he's last hung out with anyone and it's been longer since Mattia left. Every call or FaceTime never satisfied his heartbreak. It was filled with tension that neither spoke on.
A loud buzzing broke his train of thought. Briefly, he glanced at it and his heart thudded.
Matti boi: How about we talk about this in the morning?
Confusion flooded him as he stared at the screen and the screen stared back.
His concentration was broken when loud honking echoed in the night and disbelief colored his face.
No. No fucking way.
Kairi's never moved so fast. He was in his house one moment and then the next he was outside staring at a car with his friend in it.
Mattia got out of the car and held his arms open and Kairi dived right into them.
"Mattia! Mattia..Matti."
He sputtered, clinging to the taller of the two who held on just as tightly."Hey, hey, Olaf."
Mattia whispered, nuzzling into the the mop of hair.Kairi reluctantly pulled away and stared in awe at the taller.
"Hey, Kairi."
Mattia whispered.Somehow, Kairi just knew.
"Let's run away?"
Mattia's eyes sparked with something wether it be determination or overwhelming adoration for his boyfriend.
No one knew but them and that was enough.
"Let's run away."
