Mattia didn't hate silence.
He just didn't like it.Mattia liked noise. He liked hearing his friends talk, he loved music, he always left it on even if it was just for background noise. Wherever he was, it was never quiet. His group of friends was always loud. His household had noise coming from the TV or his little brother running around.
One sound stood out above all.
A giggle.
Kairi's giggle.
The sound warmed his heart and made him smile because it meant Kairi was happy. He knew it was obvious if by the way Alejandro raised an eyebrow at him or how Alvaro would wiggle his eyebrows at him. Their looks would always be met with a glare while Kairi remained oblivious.
Or, that's how it seemed.
Mattia never thought it was obvious.
He just couldn't help it. He couldn't help the way he expressed himself when Kairi was around because when Kairi was around nothing mattered; the walls he built would fall. A simple giggle undid all his hard work to remain inconspicuous.
It was the way Kairi would smile, the way he would cover his hand over his mouth when he would laugh, the shine in his eyes where joy would hide. The way his eyes would scrunch up; it was the way he would double
over while laughing and just let out his short cut out breaths. He just was radiant—like the sun.
Mattia soaked it up like the flowers.Mattia leaned back and watched as his friends poked fun at each other. Kairi's face was broken out into a smile as he nodded along to whatever Robert was saying. The youngest tried to remember the moment; committed every laugh to memory, every smile, every soft word spoken.
Kairi looked over at him and his breath got caught in his throat. That smile, it was directed at him, him of all people.
"–ight, Mattia?"
Mattia snapped back into the moment. Fuck, right, they were talking.
"I, I-I'm sorry, what?" He sputtered out, struggling to manage a sentence.
Kairi arched an eyebrow a confused look casting over his features.
"Nothing, never mind. You were zoned out." Alvaro interjected, tossing a smirk at him.
Mattia felt the blush spread to his cheeks as he coughed and looked away.
Holy fuck, I am simping so hard. Someone shoot me.
The Italian internally groaned in misery.
Why was he simping? Why him?"Mattia!"
Mattia jerked his head upwards and realized that the boys around him have left except for Kairi who frowned.
No, no. Smile. Fuck me.
A sharp pang filled his heart.
"Fuck, Jesus Christ, what you dick? I can hear you. You don't got to be shouting like a motherfucker." He grumbled, rubbing his ear dramatically.
"Well, maybe if you actually paid attention you'd realize we were leaving to the movies, stupid piece of shit."
"Maybe if you'd actually paid attention.."
Mattia mocked, a smile forming on his lips as he saw Kairi's eyebrow twitch in annoyance."I will kill you, on God."
"On God, you'd kill me, your best friend who's been with you through thick and thin? Fuck, that kinda hurted me though."
"Mattia..I swear.."
"I'm kidding! I'm kidding."
Kairi's laughter silenced Mattia's as he listened to the boy's joy.
"Your laugh is adorable." Mattia blurted out.
Kairi's laughter cut off as he stared at the Italian in silence.
"I mean...no homo?" Mattia backtracked.
Kairi let a small laugh pass his lips.
"Right, that totally wasn't gay shit at all."
"Nah, nope. You've met me right? I'm like the straightest person in our group. Fuck you mean?"
Kairi let out a laugh at that and Mattia couldn't help but grin.
"Alrighty, Tia."
Somehow, that simple sentence held more than two words. It sounded like acknowledgement—no, acceptance.
It held; I get it. You don't have to
say anything.Alright, Tia;
it's okay, I feel the same way.It meant Kairi got what he was trying to convey for so long.
He understood what Mattia couldn't voice. Mattia said more than a simple compliment. He confessed in his own way and Kairi didn't shoot him down. No, Kairi laughed and accepted it. He even recuperated it.
Mattia let out a breath he didn't know he was holding and Kari held out his hand to him.
Mattia would be a fool if he didn't take it.
Their hands clasped together and Kairi pulled Mattia up.
"Come on, we got to go watch.."
Yeah, Kairi's laugh was Mattia's favorite sound.
