Guardians were assigned to people on specific birthdays; however, no one knew which birthday they'd get their guardian.

Mattia has been waiting patiently may he add for years for his guardian to show up but presently? He's given up on his anticipation if his guardian would show up or not.

Mattia sighed as he stared at the clock.

It was a minute before it hit twelve and he couldn't care less; really, what was the big deal? A Guardian would be assigned, for what? To protect him? To guide him? Ridiculous. He can do fine just on his own.

12:00AM glared at him in the semi-dark room and just like all his previous birthdays no one showed. Mattia did his best to ignore the bitter feeling in his heart as he flipped the lamp switch off and let himself drift into a fitful slumber.

Mattia grunted as he felt a sharp jab in his side.

"Hello?"

Poke.

"Hello? Are you awake?"

Poke.

Mattia grunted.

"Well, at least you're alive."

Mattia blinked away his sleep before registering the voice in his room. The boy jerked upwards and stared at the figure before him.

"Who the hell are you?!" Mattia snapped, his eyes narrowing on the shorter male, "Why are you in my room?"

The other boy furrowed his eyebrows, "Oh, so you must be stupid. I'm Kairi. Your Guardian Angel. You know the whole sha-bang!" Kairi grinned as he spreads his fingers into a hand-jazz gesture.

"I'm sorry, what? My guardian Angel? Dude you don't even look like an Angel. What do you even have on your head? Horns?"

Mattia grimaced as he stared at the shorter male.

"Ahah, yeah, about that you see.." The male trailed off, "if anything, they did a oopsie, and well, you got yourself a demon instead of an Angel. Personally, I'd say that's a step-up."

Mattia stared.

"What the fuck.."

That's how Mattia ended up with a demon. All because Heaven seemed to run out of angel's to send and wasn't that just his luck?

Mattia eventually found himself sharing a bond with the demon. He and Kairi had different tastes in genres but somehow they got along.

At first it was rocky; he had to deal with a Kairi's mischievous behavior.

"Mattia! Wake up! You're gonna be late for school!"

Kairi's voice awoke the taller boy from his slumber. His brain barely registering the words as he rushed to put clothes on. He glanced at his clock and it blinked back 11:00pm—that's when he remembered—it was Saturday. Saturday night. Kairi was cackling in the background, wheezing, as he stared at Mattia's annoyed expression.

Kairi slept outside that night.

Having a Demon as a Guardian had its perks because if anyone messed with him all he had to do was go to Kairi—he never actually went to the boy—and, wasn't it fun seeing the shorter male's eyes glow red with intent to destroy?

"Mattia, what the fuck happened to your face?"

Mattia grimaced as he walked past the demon. He was intent on ignoring the issue—although, no one could ignore a black and blue bruising cheek—he didn't want to bring it up. He didn't miss the way Kairi bristled or how the shorter boy's eyes glowed red. He ignored the shiver that went down his spine when he saw the way fire seemed to crawl up his skin.

The boys that harassed him didn't show the next day.

And Kairi? Well, he acted like nothing happened.

However, having Kairi as a guardian limited having friends. No one wanted to be friends with a kid who had a demon on his side. They were too scared.

"They keep staring at you," Kairi growled, "I can make them stop if you want me to."

Mattia laughed as he walked down the hallway with Kairi trailing next to him. The kids never stopped talking, never stopped staring, their guardians would always be perched on their shoulder—as angels were able to take a smaller form—doing just the same. Mattia never asked Kairi to do that, he never understood why they didn't walk next to one another, however, this made them odd in the eyes of  his classmates.

"No, Kairi. It's fine, let's get to class."

Mattia didn't mind. He found himself only enjoying Kairi's presence anyways.

Mattia's eyes found Kairi who was on the foot of his bed playing on his console. He didn't stop the smile that slipped onto his face; yes, he was content.
