Benny has been teaching me baseball for a while. He would end the game with the boys early so that him and I could practice without me being made fun of.
I practically nailed catching and was getting really good at hitting when Benny proses we go out and get some ice cream.
We walked very close to each other on the sidewalk. Our shoulders occasionally brushing each other as we made small talk.
"So, you excited for game with Phillips?" I asked.
"I guess. I hope we beat him so that kid will finally shut up. He gets on my nerves." He both laughed.
Once we both picked up our ice cream, we walked back to the Sandlot. The hot San Fernando Valley sun beat down on us. This was by far the hottest day of the week. We couldn't go to the pool because I guess Benny and his friends were banned due to something stupid Squints did. So all in all, we had to suffer through the heat.
"You excited about school starting again?" He asked.
"No, I hate school. It's boring and there's too much work. Besides, I heard we don't use most of that stuff in life." I replied.
"Yeah. But we have to go. I hope we have some classes together."
"Me too." Benny gave one of his biggest smiles as we entered the Sandlot and tried to take refuge in the shade of the 'dugout'.
"Did Scotty ever get his ball back from the Beast?" I asked.
"No, I think that ball is as good as gone. There's probably hundreds over that fence, courtesy of us." I smiled at him.
"So Benny, we haven't really talked about us."
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"I mean like, what are we. We've been hanging out for a while."
"Are you asking if we're dating?" He asked.
"Kind of." I replied.
"Do you want to date?" He asked.
"I mean, yeah sort of." I was waiting for that blow, the whole 'yeah we act like a couple, but I don't want it be a couple.' thing.
"Ok, well. Jo, will you be my girlfriend?" He asked.
"Yes." I smiled brightly at him. I scooted closer to him, minding a bit of space so that our body heat would add to the blistering heat form the sun.
Benny's slightly sweaty hand found mine and I held on for a while, finishing my ice cream. After Benny finished his, we continued working on batting until it was nearly dark.
The cool air was much more refreshing than the blazing sun.
Benny walked me home again, this time, his fingers laced with mine. Once at my driveway, I felt that same feeling form a month ago when Benny walked me home. Butterflies.
"Thanks for today Benny."
"No problem Jo, see you tomorrow?" I nodded. My hand left his and I felt bold. I leaned up and gently pecked his lips. He pulled away and smiled, and I watched as he began to walk backwards, a giddy smile on his face.
