Chapter 18

A tear started to flow from Rouge's eye, she closed her eyes and the tear fell on the table. Shadow realized that. The hedgehog wanted to comfort her, but he didn't know what to say to her.

Rouge swallowed the sob. "What Scourge offered me was the chance to meet him again. In some universe, there must be a world where my father is still alive and a version of me does not exist. I could see you again. Maybe even live with him."

"You could also see Maria again. Don't you miss her?"

Shadow drank from his glass. "Yes. I would love to be able to see you again. Talk to her."

"So you..."

"But there was only one Maria, just as you only had one father."

Rouge lowered his ears when he heard that.

"I was wrong with you. I didn't want to hear what you were going through. Let me try again. Let me help you."

"This is a guilt that has always consumed me. I've just been hiding. But now an opportunity has arisen for me to correct myself."

"I have already done wrong things in Maria's name. Things that, now I know, she would disapprove of me. I believe that your father would think the same of you."

"I thought you would be the person who would best understand me."

"I haven't forgotten about it, I keep the promise I made. But I know she would like me to move on. I buried my past. And you were the person who helped me the most with that. I am grateful to you. You became my best friend."

"I can't go back now, Shadow."

The hedgehog was quiet for a moment. "Scourge. Where is he?"

'Understand at once, Shadow. I won't let anyone get in the way. It doesn't matter who it is."

"Rouge. Please. It doesn't have to be that way. You know how this is going to end."

"The ultimat life form. You trust your power too much ... You shouldn't underestimate me."

Shadow doesn't respond, just lowers his head and looks at the floor. "Rouge..." When he raised his face to speak, Rouge had what appeared to be a type of weapon in his hand, pointed at Shadow's face. With her eyes closed, she shoots. A strong light emanates from the device, which blinds the hedgehog.

Shadow got up and walked away from the table, knocking over the chair. He now covered his eyes with his hands.

Rouge also gets up, tossing the table in front of him aside. The bat walks towards Shadow and kicks him in the ribs. Rouge had considerable strength, after all she was able to fly carrying Omega. Shadow ends up being thrown away. When falling to the ground, now Shadow had his hands where the kick had been hit.

In Rouge's other hand was another device, she aims at Shadow and shoots, something ends up hitting Shadow's shoes. He opens his eyes and forces his eyes to see, although he is still foggy, he can see a blue stain on his shoes. If it was a slime, the hedgehog shakes his shoes in order to remove it, but without success.

Shadow gets up and decides to run towards Rouge, even without seeing clearly. But he ends up stumbling. He realizes that his shoes are not working as they should. "What did you do?"

"I covered your shoe holes."

"So that I can't use my top speed."

"We were partners for a long time. I know everything about you."

The black hedgehog gets up. "The next target ... will they be my rings?"

The bat did not answer.

"I will not take them out."

Rouge gritted his teeth in anger at that. "Do you keep underestimating me ?!"

"Not."

"So what is it?"

"I don't have to fight you."

The bat became more irritated. "If you haven't, I have."

Shadow then picked up his green Chaos Emerald, lifting it right away, but then his features changed from serious to confused. He looks at emerald.

"When did you do ...?" Shadow looks back at Rouge.

"The drink. It had no poison, but it did have a little thing to take its access to the power of chaos. Now this Chaos Emerald is just a stone in your hands."

"That's why you drank. It wouldn't make a difference to you."

"Yes."

"From the beginning, you were deceiving me."

Rouge spreads its wings and flies upwards. She picks up another device, something with a big button. She squeezes it. Suddenly the ground explodes. Many explosions one after another. Shadow runs with difficulty, but an explosion happens just below his feet. He is thrown into the air due to the shock wave. Then it starts to fall and disappears into the dust and smoke.

The bat dropped to the ground, and started flapping its wings in order to dispel dust and smoke. After a while, Shadow was already visible, he was getting up.

"You really prepared yourself." Shadow laughed.

"Why are you laughing?"

"I don't even know." After the hedgehog finally gets to his feet, he puts his hand on his wrist and removes his inhibiting ring. "I really underestimated you." He removes the other ring. "I won't do it anymore." Shadow starts spinning quickly, in a ball shape, and stays that way for a moment, until it shoots towards Rouge.

The bat smiles, presses another button and puts an arm in front of it as if to use it to defend itself from Shadow's impact. But when Shadow was about to crash into Rouge, he stops nowhere. Something like an invisible wall was between the two. It was a force field coming out of the device on Rouge's arm. She was using him as a shield.

Shadow kept spinning, not moving. Rouge was trying hard not to be pushed, because the hedgehog was also strong. Until Shadow is thrown away. He falls on his back on the floor. The hedgehog then starts to stand up again.

Far away. Rubis heard the sound of explosions with his bat hearing. She tells Umbra what she heard, and soon the two left to find out what happened.
