"I think you're overthinking this," Savannah says to me after I tell her there was just something about the person who teleported us that makes me believe we should be focusing on him/her.
"Maybe. Just a lil," I reply. "But that doesn't change anything. Whoever that person was brought us to that gym for a reason. The only people who knew about it was myself, Palmer, Enzo, Dane, his men, Arlo and Avery."
"For arguments sake, let's say that person took us there for a reason. What was the reason?" Palmer asks.
"You are all focusing on the wrong thing, it has been two days since our base got blown to bits and we're still ignoring the fact that this person had powers. They can teleport, our powers didn't work on them and they knew exactly where to find us," Enzo says rendering the room silent.
"Even if we figure all of that out, we have never faced a threat like this. We literally can't touch them but they can touch us," Palmer says looking at me like I can answer her.
"Don't look at me, I'm as lost as you are. However, I do believe finding out who that person was will get us closer to figuring it all out." I don't know why but I have this strong feeling that this person is the key.
"How do you propose we do that?" Enzo asks.
"Only a handful of people knew about the significance of that gym. So we need to find those people and ask some questions."
"Well boss, I hate to burst your idea bubble but Dane is dead, so is Avery, and I wiped Arlos memory myself. The only people who know about that gym are standing in this room." I hate it when Palmer drops the logic bomb on me.
"Are we sure Dane is dead?" Enzo asks and we all look at him like he is crazy, so he continues, "Don't give me that look. We just fought untouchable, teleporting ninjas, Dane not being dead doesn't seem that crazy anymore."
"We know he is dead because I can't shift into him anymore."
"What if that's because he created a device that made sure you couldn't do that anymore. Or you just don't have your powers all figured out." I reply by shifting into him and saying, "Oh really now?"
"Enzo has a point," Palmer says and I shift back into myself.
"What?" I ask.
"Have you tried shifting into Avery ever since..." she died? Yes. Of course... okay no I haven't, it would be an unnecessary confirmation of her death that I will never be ready for.
"Maybe. But what does that have to do with anything?" I ask my little sister who has the balls to ask such an unsettling question.
"How can you not dude???" Enzo scolds as if it's tradition that after ones girlfriend dies, one must shift into her.
"Oh excuse my incompetence, I'm sorry, I thought traces of her skin and bones at the crime scene was proof enough," I sarcastically say.
"No, it's not," he responds.
"Okay boys. Let's calm down. Kai, I know it's difficult but would you please try shifting into Avery now for us," Savannah says in a very gentle tone. When I don't say anything Palmer starts talking. "Kai please. It's the only way we're going to figure this out."
"Okay fine." I'm not proud of this moment, but I just stood there pretending to try and change. I can't do it. I've finally reached a point in my life where I don't break down every time someone says her name. Not being able to shift into her would just feel like I'm reliving her death all over again. I'm not okay enough to go through that. "See,nothing. Are you happy now?" I say and then start walking towards the door.
