겨울

the two stroll in silence in the quiet night. a blanket of stars hovering above them. all that's heard are the cicadas that chirred to the moon and heavy steps that hit the dirt path.

both walk with lips pursed and eyes fixed anywhere but each other. after the quick heart to heart conversation, the two had kept quiet since.

a day will come that those once painful memories suddenly flood back into your mind yet the pain isn't there anymore. you'll just smile. because you've accepted, forgave, and cherished. thats when you can say i've healed.

those words lingered in his mind as they stroll. as well as the the honey gaze that shined upon his own as she spoke, and her soft smile akin to a field of violets.

perhaps there was a sprinkle of magic in her words. because after what seemed like a lifetime, a feeling he thought he were to never grasp again had ignited in his chest;

a gleam of hope.

the boy stops in his tracks, standing still among the expanse of the night. "thank you," he mutters. the girl tilts her head, seemingly confused. jeongguk continues, "for everything."

"you're a great friend you know. you've turned some of my most miserable nights into day. and— that means a lot to me." his words come to a halt, sight gazing at the starry night.

"a bit poetic today, huh?" nari teases, and the two crack a giggle.

"the scar in my heart may not be healed yet, maybe it won't ever heal," he pauses, eyes meeting hers once more. "but you remind me to keep going. you make me realize there's still hope. even for me."

the two stand still, encased by trees and a comforting silence. he cracks a gentle smile, seemingly contagious as nari finds the corners of her lips curving into a grin of its own.

"do i get a prize for being an amazing friend?" she says jokingly, earning a laugh from both.

"i'll take you to the garden everyday, and anytime you want. so that you can draw all the butterflies you want!" his nose scrunches, and she smiles.

"when?" the girl asks, to which he replies, "on the days of spring."

the last whirl of winter wind strikes and they resume their stroll back. a bashful grin on both faces as they sauntered side by side. a pair of wings powdered in blue wanders with them, tracing their steps. it tags along, lingering around the two. "oh," the butterfly catches the boy's attention. his gaze shifts to what looks like fluttering snowflake with its light blue wings.

"a spring azure," she mutters as it perches on her dainty fingertips.

"what does it mean?" the boy asks with doe eyes that gleamed with curiosity.

she chuckles, "it means spring is on its way."

the pair of wings flutter away and their lips carve into a smile, a grin as warm as spring. their eyes follow the butterfly as it soars into the trees and out of their sight.

it seems that spring wasn't on its way, but rather it came early. wild flowers coming to bloom, golden drops of sunshine, and a wave of warmth.

spring was yet to come in season, but perhaps in their hearts.
