and so the dark draped over the bright skies. as night fell, the blue haze of day lifted to reveal the expanse of stars that twinkled beneath jeongguk and nari.

"i'll see you tomorrow!" the girl waved excitedly with her crescent-like eyes and a smile as wide as the moon.

"it's fine," the boy said in an exhausted manner as he stood up from their bench, "i won't be here, don't bother waiting."

the girl had froze in place, watching him as he walked away. her smile had melted into a gloomy pout. the boy had left before she could even ask why.

and so the two parted ways under the stars of the dark night. jeongguk was amused by nari's character. she felt warm to be around and was beyond kind, not to mention a social butterfly who wouldn't think twice to go up to a someone. the boy knew all of this because that's what she had done to him. without thinking, nari considered him a friend and he felt the warmth she possessed as she kept him company.

but that was as far as he would go, the boy thought. for the past few hours he had stayed with the girl he had decided to draw the line and put an end to this newly blossomed friendship she had created, before either of them get attached.

the boy didn't come here with the intent of a new friendship. his goal was to find the escape from the dark maze he had been running in for years. all he wishes for is to heal the wounds in his heart and he can't afford to be distracted.

after all, what was the point in this newly blossomed friendship if he were to leave soon? all that would bring was more pain to both hearts, and jeongguk had enough of pain. that feeling that leaves such a deadly sting, he wouldn't want to feel it again.

the boy dragged his heavy feet down the hallway and fishes into his back pocket for the keys. he had been out all day and the thought of lying down seems so lovely at the moment. with heavy eyes, he hurriedly unlocks the door.

that's when a loud gasp coming from the other side of the hallway was heard. the boy looks up to see the commotion and his eyes widen in shock.

"nari?" he looks at her surprised expression, that was now carving into a smile. his hands came up to his face, gasping as well. "what are you doing here?"

"i live here."
