the boy waits outside, dressed prim and proper, adorning a clean yet simple look. spring greets his skin as butterflies dance along the songs of the wind.
there was a playfulness in nature, blossoms kissing the sky as birds sang. jeongguk patiently waits, eyes fixed on the oak door as he stood in the midst of spring.
the door creaks open and a rush of excitement surges through. bubbly nari steps out almost a tad different to her usual look. this time her hair was let down, wavy hazelnut locks that dropped to her shoulders with tiny butterfly clips along the side, a simple dress with the colors of spring, and the same beaming smile akin to the blossoms.
perhaps the boy couldn't help but stare for a while at the sudden change. was that the sound of his heart racing? or was it just the sound of the woodpecker ebbing on the branch above him...
eyes reflecting different gazes meet as they stood across one another. his were bashful, eyes trying its best to avoid hers yet to no avail. however, nari's were like crescents, smiley eyes just like the one her face adorned.
she gasps, "what's all this?" the girls asks, her face growing surprised. the boy shyly averts his gaze as he scratches his head, "oh, this?" he utters, pointing at the vehicle behind him, a car painted yellow and of old design. "seokjin hyung lent me his car for the day."
"ooh, seems like you got it all planned." she giggles, nudging his arm in a playful manner. with no hesitation she hops in.
the drive was quiet, for a while that was, until laughs and stories were shared from one to the other. to pass some time, the two played a game of who could name the most flowers they drove by. to no surprise, of course nari was winning.
"maybe it was a mistake playing this with you." the boy pouts, a touch of pettiness in his tone that made her burst into laughter.
and so the car moved along the empty roads with swiftness as they drove alongside rolling hills that the two watched in awe as they chatter.
"i can't even remember the last time i rode a car." the girl says in the midst of their conversation. the boy looks at her in shock right before she tells him to keep his eyes back on the road. the two giggle, "really?" the boy exclaims in disbelief.
"i can probably count the times i hopped into a car with my fingers." she continues, "back home, everything you need is at walking distance, there was no need to use a car— ever."
"so this all pretty much new to you?" the boy asks, to which she nods in reply.
"i gotta say, it's really nice though." she says, making the boy chuckle. "look at the view." he watches her as she prompts her elbows by the window, chin resting atop the palms of her hands. it was like something out of a movie, she thought. she stared in awe seeing how beautiful nature could be at spring.
"guk-ah, can you roll the windows down?" she asks out of the blue. the boy nods and with a press of a button the window slowly opens. a gush of wind immediately fills the car as it drove with speed as well as the scent of spring oh so subtle and sweet.
her lips carve into a smile, no wonder it was her favorite season. it was like it was calling her name, as she found her hand pushing slowly towards the window.
inch by inch she put her hand out the window, reluctantly at first, but as the wind graced her fingertips, in a snap, she was at ease.
the wind tickled her fingers and danced along her skin. a refreshing feeling that made her heart sing every melody.
"woo!" the girl shouts out the window as she lets out her other hand as well, giving it its share of spring breeze. "jeongguk-ah, you should do it too." she suggests, already nudging on his arm. the boy only laughs at the gesture.
"oh come on!" she nudges on her arm once again, this time more vigorously. the boy lets out a chuckle and finally gives in, rolling down his side of the window.
one hand on the wheel and one hand out with the wind. spring breeze tousling his hair and tickling his nose. the two couldn't help but smile.
it was spring that had brought them better days. spring that had made their hearts sing.
