I parked the car in Hayvenhurst's driveway and took a look at the sleeping angel on the backseat. After a long day he spent at the Ranch playing all kinds of games with some kids from the Make A Wish foundation, Faraji was exhausted. Careful not to wake him up, I took him out of his car seat and put his backpack on my other shoulder. Instantly, he wrapped his arms around my neck as I made my way to the big wooden door of the family house. I didn't have time to knock that my future mother-in-law had already opened the door.
"Good evening, darling," she greeted me in that sweet voice of hers, touching my arm as I crossed the doorstep. "Look at that little angel," she said in awe at the sight of her grandson sleeping in my arms. "He's such a mama's boy."
"That he is," I verified, chuckling as I rubbed Faraji's back. "Can I lay him on the couch before I put him to bed?"
"Sure thing, you're home here," she encouraged me, as she closed the door behind me.
When I reached the large living room, I put the little one down and made sure to take his comforter out of his backpack. He stirred a little, but he didn't wake up. He was still sound asleep.
As our court hearing was the next day, we asked Katherine and Joseph to look after Faraji for the night. We had to get up early, and we knew that spending some time with his Nana was something he was looking forward to. As Faraji was only five years old, we didn't want him to be present during the hearing; not because we thought something would go wrong, but because we agreed on saying that this wasn't a place for a child to be.
However, I wasn't only in Encino to drop Faraji to his grandparents' house, I was also there to have a chat with Joseph. I wanted to do everything it took to avoid the argument he would face with Katherine concerning his relationship with Michael, and hopefully make things right between him and his son.
I was aware that this task was probably the most difficult one I was given since I met Michael. His relationship with his father had always been complicated, to say the least. I didn't know how or if I'd be able to change anything at all, but I needed to try. For Michael's sake, and for Katherine's.
My future mother-in-law and I headed to the kitchen in order to let the little one sleep, and she offered me some tea that I gladly accepted. I could see she was more than happy to have me and Faraji over, and the feeling was mutual. I loved Katherine like my own mother. She was certainly the sweetest person I knew. Just like her son, she cared genuinely about people. She had the biggest heart.
"You look amazing," Katherine complimented, as she sat across from me. "How are you feeling with the hearing and the wedding coming soon? Are you nervous?"
"I am," I admitted, putting my hands around the hot cup. "But Michael's extraordinary. He never fails to give me all the support I need. No matter how busy he is, he makes time for me and the little one."
