Hayes POV
I don't know if Amber is just really nice or really stupid but I know she's special. She was willing to forget me lying to her and beating up her boyfriend just so we could be friends again. I think that's a keeper.
It's Christmas Eve and I'm hanging with Amber and her family since my mom thinks the only thing special about Christmas is that Santa brings cigarettes. I'm not sure if her parents are that keen on us being friends since I still am a delinquent and all but they're trying.
"Hayes, another piece of fudge?" Her mom offers me the plate and I gratefully take a piece. Amber's house feels like a real home instead of my place.
"You wanna stay for dinner?' Amber asks me while trying to hang lights around their huge tree. When I say huge I'm talking 11 feet.
I take the lights from her and hang them up and she smiles. "Of course I do."
"Good choice. Mom's making steak." Amber's older sister, Olivia, says to me while hanging an ornament. She's a junior in college and came home for the holidays. I smile and just enjoy everything around me, something that hasn't happened since my dad died. Amber squeezes my hand as her mom puts the star on the tree and I only wish my mom weren't a robot.
Later that night after dinner, Amber, Olivia, Nick (Olivia's boyfriend), and I play Sorry. I haven't played a board game in forever and it feels weird to be normal. Just playing games on Christmas Eve.
"Sorry!" Nick yells when he flicks Olivia's piece off the board and she punches him. He kisses her and Amber wiggles her eyebrows at me. Amber and I aren't dating, just really good friends at the moment. Since she just forgave me, I don't think we're automatically going to start going out. I may tun into a monster again.
Around 11:00, I lay with Amber in her bed just watching tv.
"I gotta go soon." I say still staring at Toddlers and Tiaras.
"Come back for the Christmas party tomorrow. Bring your mom." She says while shoving more popcorn in her mouth.
"Stop hogging the popcorn. And I don't know if she'll come."
"Cmon she'll have fun. And my dad can make a ham." I nod wondering if I can actually get my mom to show up.
"Well it's getting late, I don't want my mom home alone on Christmas eve." She nods and gives me a hug.
"But seriously come tomorrow. I have a present for you." I nod and start to walk out.
"Too bad there's no mistletoe in here." I joke.
She rolls her eyes and says, "Merry Christmas Hayes." That makes me love her even more.
Amber POV
The next day, it's Christmas. Even though I'm 18 now, I still go to jump on my parents bed and wake up Olivia and Nick, I could be 62 and still wake up at 7:00 on Christmas.
"Wake up lovebirds!" I yell jumping on Olivia. She throws a pillow at my head and Nick laughs. Nick is a good boyfriend for my sister, I really hope he stays.
After waking my parents, I go downstairs and prepare 4 mugs of coffee for the people who think waking up at 7:00 is stupid. When they finally get downstairs, I hand them their mugs.
"Thank the heavens!" Olivia shouts and I roll my eyes at Nick. He does the crazy thing with his hand and I laugh.
"Living room PEOPLE!" I shout and my dad covers his ears. "Sorry."
We finally get settled and start to open presents. Olivia opens hers first from me. When she opens it she glares at me but I can see her trying not to laugh.
