Chapter 3

Ashley's POV

I grabbed Payton's wrist and led him into the school. I had already memorized my schedule the day before, so I knew where to go. 

"Our first period is math, so just follow me" I said letting go of his wrist.

We walked down the hall and into the class, where the words "sit wherever you'd like" was written on the whiteboard. The desks were arranged in pairs. I walked over to a pair of desks on the right side of the room closer to the back and took a seat as Payton followed close behind.

"Can I sit with you, Ashley?" He said shyly 

"Yeah dude of course," I replied, pulling out the chair next to me for him to sit.

"Wow, 'dude'? Ouch" He said laughing.

"Well, you're going to have to get used to that, sir. Because my entire vocabulary consists of: dude, bro, and bruh" I giggled.

"Oh, is that so?" He replied.

"Yep, I call everyone dude and bro, and I start most of my sentences with bruh." I said smiling, "Unless you have something else you want me to call you"

"Just Payton is fine" He said amused.

"No way, using people's real names is boringggg" I said leaning back in my chair, "Can I shorten it?!?" I said excitedly sitting up straight.

"What do you mean?" He stated in a slightly confused tone.

"Can i call you Payt, instead of Payton. That'd stop me from calling you dude all the time" I said with a pouty face. I was practically begging with this facial expression. 

"Really? Payt?" He said amused by my sudden pleading. 

"Yes. Payt." I said in a confident tone. Even if he said no now, I was set on the nickname, so there was no way he could get out of it.

"Sure, that sounds fine" He said smirking at me. 

"YAY!" I celebrated. But then, I realized that I may have been a little too loud because multiple people in the classroom were looking and me.

Before I had time to be embarrassed,  the teacher came in from the hallway to start class.

It was time for lunch and Payt had been with with me the entire day. I'm a pretty social person, so we became friends super quick. My friends say I have a "gift" for making people like me even though I'm one of the most annoying people in the world.

"Yo Ash who's the dude" I heard a girl's voice from behind me say as I entered the cafeteria. I turned to see Tessa and Brent. 

"Oh hey guys this is Payt... sorry, Payton" I said, "Payton, this is Tessa and Brent" 

"Yo" Brent said giving a little wave.

"Hey, so are you new?" Tessa said holding out her hand for a handshake. 

Payton took her hand for the handshake and responded, " Yeah, I just moved across the street from Joel. Do you know him" He said releasing Tessa's hand. 

"Oh yeah he's our friend Cole's friend from the football team" Brent said with wide eyes. He was really bad with secrets and you could tell it was taking all of his energy not to tell Payton about Lily's crush. 

"Yep that's him" Payton said in return, "So is it cool if I sit with you guys? I've only really been with Ashley all day, so I dont really have anywhere else to go," He laughed with his hand on the back of his neck.
