Logan stopped the carriage in front of the cottage. It wasn't too small, big enough to give Virgil a proper home. The farm would take a little work, but he could get it started easily.
The seven year old Virgil woke up from his nap as he felt the carriage stop moving. He was leaning against Logan's shoulder and sat up slowly, yawning.
"Good morning, sleepy head," Logan teased, "We're home."
Virgil sat up and looked around, spotting the cottage. It was certainly bigger than Logan's old home, it looked like there were two floors.
"Ma- I mean Black won't find us here, right?" he asked.
"Of course not, and if he does we'll be able to spot him from far away, there's plenty of flat land. But I doubt he'll find us. Let's head inside and see what's there."
Logan unlocked and opened the door, revealing the dusty cottage and furniture that came with it. It would take some work, but with a little cleaning and maybe some fixing up Logan will be able to make it a home.
Virgil wasn't used to a space so big and was amazed by the inside. He set his box of things down and ran inside, exploring the house. Logan followed and opened the shades, coughing and waving the dust away.
Downstairs there was a couch in front of an empty bookshelf that was built into the wall next to the fireplace, behind the couch was a table and four chairs, there was the kitchen next to the small dining room.
Logan searched through the cabinets in the kitchen and closets downstairs, in the cupboard under the stairs he found a broom and dust pan. He quickly got to work with the downstairs.
Virgil went upstairs and found a small bedroom with a wardrobe and bed. He opened the brown curtains, sneezing from the dust that flew around the room when he did so, and saw the front yard.
He smiled widely and turned to the bed. He jumped onto it, laying back. In his opinion, it was much better than the couch or the carriage. Dusty, but more comfortable.
The whole house amazed him and he was happy that he had freedom to explore. He went to different rooms, there were only three bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. It was all dusty and pretty much had the same things, wardrobes and beds. The bathroom of course didn't have these.
Soon he came downstairs and saw Logan sweeping the kitchen.
"This place is huge!" Virgil said, running up to him.
"I'm glad you like it," Logan replied as he turned to him. He saw dirt covering Virgil's face and snorted in amusement. "How did you get dirt all over your cheeks?"
Logan kneeled down and held Virgil's chin. Immediately he regretted it as Virgil tensed up and moved back, slapping his hand away on instinct.
Virgil looked shaken up, but snapped out of whatever trance he was in. "I'm sorry! I-I didn't mean-"
"It's okay, I'm not mad," Logan interrupted softly. "Are you okay?"
Virgil took in a shaky breath but nodded. "I-I just... it was..."
"Virgil, it's okay, breathe."
After a few deep breaths, Virgil continued. "Bl-black used to grab me like that to m-make me look at him."
"Oh sweetie, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt or scare you."
"It's fine, I'm fine, I should be over it by now."
"Virgil it's only been a few months, I would be surprised if you had healed from something so traumatic so soon. It's okay to be afraid. Please tell me if I do something that makes you uncomfortable."
