Virgil has always known there was something different about him. And no it's not the fact that he's a witch, it was something else. Something with his vision.

He couldn't tell the difference between gray or black and brown. He has difficulty picturing descriptions in books of anything that has the color brown, which is more than you would think.

It wasn't that big of a deal, he can live with it. It was just... really weird and annoying.

It had been almost six months since Logan rescued Virgil from Black and they were very comfortable with their new lives.

Virgil still doesn't like to be left home alone, but has found plenty of coping mechanisms. He can read or draw, play with the toys Logan has gotten him, nap, or any number of things.

Logan didn't like leaving him alone, he was afraid Virgil would need him or get scared. He always kept his trips as short as possible but that was hard since he had purposely moved far from town so Virgil can play outside without having to worry about anyone seeing him.

Logan still wished he could make friends with kids his age, but he knew it would be hard even if they lived near anyone like that. Kids are mean and they would make fun of Virgil's eyes or call him horrible things because he's a witch. It wasn't fair, he's just a kid, he's never hurt anyone and Logan doubts he could.

But even if Virgil was a normal kid, Logan isn't a normal adult. He's a bounty hunter, one of the most famous of them. He was sure anyone would recognize his name and then they would recognize Virgil as Logan Crofts son, and not Virgil. That wasn't a good childhood.

Logan and Virgil sat outside on the porch of their house. They were both reading their own books, sitting in comfortable silence. Virgil leaned against Logan and Logan had his arm around him.

They had worked on the farm, planting vegetables and pulling weeds or rocks out from the ground. Virgil was still a little weak, but has gotten much stronger and Logan was proud of him.

Virgil was reading a description for someone's appearance, and frowned in confusion when he read what color their hair is.

"Hey dad? What's brown?" he asked.

"What do you mean?" Logan inquired.

"I mean, what is it? Is it a color? I've seen it mentioned a lot in stories."

"Yeah, it's a very common color. The trees and dirt are brown, your hair is brown."

"But my hair is gray." Virgil was getting confused.

"Ooh, I see." Logan smiled as it dawned on him. "You can't see brown."

"Is... is that bad?"

"No no, of course not," Logan chuckled. "I mean, it's more of a good thing than a bad thing. It means your soulmate eyes are brown."

Logan didn't think about it before, of course Virgil had a soulmate, he felt slightly embarrassed that he just realized this. Well, he was feeling a lot of emotions right now, ugh emotions.

He was happy Virgil had a soulmate, witches had soulmates too. Witches, elves, fairies, even dragons. But... he was upset about it since there was a huge chance Virgil would never meet his soulmate.

Not everyone did, and Virgil is a very shy kid. Plus he's a witch! His eyes are purple! If he ever goes in public, he's going to have to hide his eyes so he won't attract anyones attention.

"What's a... soulmate?" Virgil asked.

Logan smiled softly at him. "Well, a soulmate is like... a partner. The universe chose them for you, they're someone who will make you happy. You're connected together, you can't see your soulmates eye colors and they can't see yours, that is until you look each other in the eyes. They do say the eyes are the windows to the soul. Most soulmates will get together in a romantic relationship, unless one or both of them are aromantic, then they'll just be platonic partners or close friends. Sometimes people have multiple soulmates and can't see several colors."

Virgil smiled, "That's amazing. I wonder who my soulmate is. What's your soulmate's eye color?"

Logan looked up to the sky and sighed. "Their eye color is blue."

"Like yours! Have you met them?"

Logan looked down and over the fields, his heart heavy. "No, sadly I have not."

"Oh, well I hope you do! I can't wait to meet them!"

Logan looked back to Virgil. He sighed again and smiled.

"Me too."
