Being a vampire was not something you enjoyed. You had outlived everyone; family, friends, lovers. It was your least favorite thing about yourself, though you would never really die or get infected, you were always left alone, left to carry the burden of always being the last to live, always being the one to watch those you held dearest, die.

It was one of many reasons you stuck to yourself. If you didn't talk to anyone, you wouldn't have to worry about caring for them, you wouldn't feel any pain or remorse if they somehow left you like everyone else always did.

But that all changed when you met Ellie. She had showed you that living a life alone is no life to live on your own, especially in a world with infected all around. She was the first person you had let into your life, the first person you had let take your heart, the first person you had been able to trust, the first person you had loved, in years.

You were truly lucky to have stumbled upon Ellie all those years ago. You loved her with all your heart. But there was always an underlying thought that lingered in the back of your mind.

What if she died? what if she left you all alone? .

"Y/n?"

Your head perked up at the sound of your name being called. You peered to your left, eyes connecting with the beautiful green orbs you loved so much.

"Hmm?" you hummed, eyes scanning her beautifully paled and freckled face. She continued to gaze at you, worry swimming in her irises.

"Are you okay?"

You nodded and turned away, gaze now on your horse rather than the brunette you loved most.

"Hey." she calls softly, but you don't look her way "Y/n, hey stop." reaching her hand out she tugs on your horses reins, stopping your horse from moving any further. While both of your horses stood idly, she took your face in her hands, gently turning you to face her.

"What's going on?" she questions. You sigh and shake your head "I just-" "-You two alright back there? We gotta get goin, suns gonna be settin soon."

Pulling her gaze and hands away from you, Ellie turns to Joel "Yeah, we're good! Be right there!" the gruff man nods and continues forward on his horse, leaving the two of you alone. A heavy sigh rushed passed Ellie's lips as she looked to you. Your eyes were still fixated on your horse as she stared at you, you knew that if you looked her in the eyes, you would crumble to pieces and the truth of why you were acting so off, would come out.

Ellie frowns when you don't look to her, and she takes your hand, gently squeezing.

"We'll talk about this when we get home, okay?"

She watched as you silently nodded, gently hitting your heel against the your horses side, telling them to move. The entire time you traveled back home, Ellie never let go of your hand.

"Okay y/n, whats going on?"

You took a seat next to Ellie on the bed, legs crossed and eyes fixated on yours and Ellie's intertwined hands as you nervously toyed with her fingers.
