Chapter 36

Jason's PoV

She looked so beautiful that the air seemed to be knocked out of my lungs. Her black hair straightened to the perfect and longest length. Just how I liked it. Her lips painted red, not her typical shade of blood maroon, but a bright red. A vision to behold, a beauty to be preserved. She had always been beautiful in my eyes before this too but now even, Venus, the goddess of beauty would be put to shame by the wraith that stood in front of me. So enchanted by her spell I was that I couldn't even a form a proper sentence. Her sapphire eyes pierced my grey-green orbs as she looked at me and I felt that my soul was exposed to her penetrating gaze. And when she nodded, agreeing for us to have a talk about everything, I felt so jubilant I could cry and in that moment I thanked God, if there was one. But there ought to be one or such mesmerising beauty could not exist.

"Hello!" I snap my fingers in front of Jason's eyes to recapture his lost attention and bring him back to earth.

He quickly clears his throat and the expression I had yet again beheld in his beautiful grey-green eyes extinguishes like a candle burning out.

"Well Katie lives just around the corner so maybe we could walk? Or would you rather we take my motorcycle?"

"No, I think walking is fine."

"Good. So walk and talk it is."

"Jason what do you want to talk about?"

"Seriously?" He looks at me, astonished. " You surely have not forgotten about our engagement, have you?"

"How could I forget? Speaking of the engagement, when is the formal ceremony?"

By this time we are walking down my driveway, towards the main gate.

"You seriously don't know, do you?" Again he seems to be in shock and shakes his head at my lack of knowledge regarding my life. " Bro, it's literally on Thursday. Have they not told you yet?"

'Bro.' What a nice thing to call the girl your parents tied you off to.

"Father tried talking to me about it yesterday before leaving but I kind of ignored it."

"Oh."

"Yep."

"Listen Nini, I need to talk to you about something."
"Yeah you've mentioned it about a hundred and fifty one time now but what about? We don't have much time."

"Nini... I just want to say that I really had no say in the decision at all."

"I know."

He breathes a sigh of relief, falling silent for some time, understanding that I am not mad at him and that I do not blame him for a decision we both obviously had no say in. We continue in silence for some time before he begins to speak again,

"You do remember that we were friends before all of this, right? Before Nick, yes, I know about him," he adds, noticing my shocked expression, " before I went to university, we were friends, rather best friends I'd say. Have you forgotten Nini? Have you forgotten the fun we've had, the pranks we've played on Raymond and Shelly? The first time we tasted alcohol by sneaking into your wine cellar?"

I laugh as the memories play in my head as if on a film reel. All the jubilant times we've shared, Jason teaching me to ride a two-wheeled bicycle, me dropping my milkshake on any girl that'd try to hit on him because I'd get jealous so easily when he'd pay them attention, the first time we tasted whiskey.

Did I mention he was my first official drinking buddy? First but ever since I had not stopped drinking.

I relished in remembrance of the times when I had cried about something mother had said and Jason had consoled me, giving way to the 'crush-type' feelings in the first place.
