Xavier is Dying: 14

chapter 14:

Xander's POV

"It was you! You killed my best friend, I'll kill you!" Bella screamed as she tried to dive for Aries.

Tears flew down Bella's face like a waterfall as Ricky held her back. Ricky was looking at Aries in disgust, knowing he was the reason his mate was hurting so much. Molly was frozen, not too sure how to react.

But God, did the baby's heartbeat rile me and my wolfs anger further.

"You're lying-" Aries began before my wolf cut him off.

"Heard that before. You'd think you would have learned your lesson." I tutted at him with a sick smile on my face, referring to the woods. "Molly is a twisted facade, did you really think you could go your whole life pretending she was your mate?"

"We should go." Aries said to Molly, trying to have her leave the room and the situation.

"Ah but the fun isn't over yet... is it Molly dear. Does the big bad alpha know?" My wolf cooed at Molly who shrunk back in fear.

"Know what?" Aries scoffed, fed up.

"That you aren't the father to that baby." I addressed Aries before turning back to Molly. "I'm right, yes? The masking potion you've tried to use isn't strong enough. Smart, though. You could have had everyone fooled if you hadn't run into a royal. Shame that."

"Who do you think you are?" Aries growled, walking towards me and slamming me into the wall behind me.

Shock covered his face as he looked down at his hand pressed on my chest to hold me on the wall. The electrifying mate bond still swirled around us as we touched

My wolf slipped away leaving me back in control. He knew I needed to be the one to do this.

"You feel it don't you?" I whispered quiet enough for just Aries to hear.

"What's going on?" He mumbled.

"Did you ever feel like I truly died?" I asked Aries who stared into my eyes in confusion before realisation crossed his face.

"It can't be..." Aries replied, still holding me against the wall with his hand.

"Step away from the prince!" A guard hollered, running into the kitchen before taking Aries by the arm and escorting him out along with everyone else.

I don't know what came over him but suddenly Aries dived into action, demanding to be let go. Ricky was telling him to get it in check as he was still comforting Bella.

"You don't understand! The prince is Xavier! Xander is Xavier!" Aries yelled, still trying to get out of the guards grip.

Little did everyone else know, he was right.

"Sorry for the disturbance my prince." a different guard said, shutting the kitchen door leaving me alone.

I sighed, crossing my arms and leaning my head back against the wall. It hurt more than anything to see everyone again, including Bella as much as I hated to say it. Any relief in seeing them was washed away leaving the chilling, overwhelming feeling of loneliness.

I'd never be able to be 'Xavier' again, so who was I anymore?

"Xander, baby? Is everything okay?" The queen asked, rushing into the kitchen and over to me.

She inspected my face throughly for anything out of the ordinary before stepping back when she realised I was fine, unscathed.

"Everything is fine." I replied to her concern, completing my lie with a stiff smile.

"Alright dear. Well we've put an end to the ball. It's been a long night anyways. Your father is just wishing everyone off now." My 'mother' explained.

I nodded silently, not sure if I was up to talking much anymore.

"Are you sure everything is okay?" She asked once more, worry creasing at her brows.

"Fine, but I was wondering. That training camp I denied? Is it too late to still go?" 

I needed an escape. I needed out of here and I needed to find myself as Xander. That, and with Aries knowing who I really was, I wasn't bothering to stick around a second time and get hurt. It was his turn.

"Of course not dear, I'll see if they can have you before tomorrow evening." The queen replied with a delighted smile, rushing off to make the phone calls.

Staring around the room with a sigh, I finally got up off the wall and made my way over to where Bella had been making her cake. The abandoned cake batter lay on the counter looking as lonely as I felt.

With a swipe of the finger, I scooped a small amount onto my index finger and tasted it. One thing was for sure. No matter what was going on, Bella's chocolate cake would always taste like home.

At that moment, Some waiters entered the kitchen with their trays of glasses, which was my cue to go. I exited the kitchen and went the opposite direction from the ballroom, settling on the floor beside the large pane window which looked out onto the woods.

I felt watched, uneasy almost until I felt the presence of my butler, Ray, next to me. He was a wise older man who had been doubling as my therapist the last few days.

"you know, no matter how much you fight it, mates will always find their way back to each other. In love or hate is up to you." He told me with a pat on the shoulder.

"How did you know I was thinking about my mate?" I asked, confusion overtaking all my thoughts.

"I've been around long enough to know when someone is fighting love." He replied, a wise look crossing his features.

With a sigh, I replied "It's so complicated, I'm not sure it's even what's best for me right now."

"Ah, well there you go. You said 'right now'. Love is an amazing thing, and sometimes the universe is cruel by granting you your soulmate at the wrong time. Whether it takes two years or two days, if its for you, it won't pass you." Ray smiled.

"You seem to speak from experience." I hummed, agreeing with his statement.

"My soulmate chose wealth over me, but I know she cares for me otherwise she would of rejected me. I'm just waiting for the day she realises love is more valuable than power or money." He replied, sadness dancing in his eyes.

"How can someone who treats you so horribly be your soulmate?" I asked, shooting up in place, staring at him.

"I wonder that too sometimes..." He drifted off, looking down.

We sat there in silence for a while, letting the words spoken and unspoken dance around our minds.

The universe truly was cruel.
