Chapter 34
Xanders POV
The navy room engulfed my senses along with Aries' scent.
After Dante and Aries found me in the mountains, they helped me back to the pack. Aries felt it was best to keep me safe in his room until I made a full recovery from my injuries.
I mean, I was already healed by the time we reached the pack thankfully due to my wolf but he was having none of it, claiming I needed to recover. His over protectiveness had me rolling my eyes about twenty times a day at him.
He did have a point though. It was weird feeling like I no longer had a target on my back.
"Room service?" Aries said jokingly as he opened the door holding pancakes, pulling me from my thoughts.
"Deja vu much?" I chuckled, referring to him bringing me pancakes when I was staying in the guest room.
Taking the pancakes from him, I made space for him to sit next to me.
"Yeah, except this time you aren't contemplating being my mate. I hope." Aries smirked.
"Nope you're good." I smiled.
I then tucked into my breakfast, so hungry and exhausted that I wolfed the pancakes down.
"How's Bella?" I asked once i'd finished my breakfast.
"Waking up. Don't worry. She'll live."
"Good, good, I'll go and visit her this afternoon."
Aries glanced my way, nodding slightly and biting his lip.
"What?" I asked him confused.
"Well...whats going to happen when you go back to the castle? We can't do this back and forth thing but we've worked so hard to get here, I can't throw that away." He huffed out, frustration leaking through.
"I don't know..." I drifted off, meeting his gaze.
"Well, I'd rather step down as alpha than lose you. You mean too much to me. I'm fed up pining for you or wishing I had you. I have you, Xander, and I don't want to lose you. You'd do the same for me right? I mean, your family is here, I'm here, Bella and your life is here." Aries ranted as I suddenly felt uneasy.
He didn't think I could pick him over the entire kingdom did he?
"Aries, I want nothing more than to wake up next to you every day of my life but thats not how things work. You are alpha, by linage. I am king. We swore to carry out these duties. The world is bigger than us Aries." I sighed.
It was silent for a moment, him thinking about my words.
"I can't give you all or nothing." I whispered.
Again, he stayed silent, staring at the wall behind me rather than at me.
"I just...I thought..." He struggled before finally gathering his words.
"I thought I meant more to you."
"You do, don't do this Aries. Don't ruin this. We have been so rocky getting here, lets put that behind us. We can manage this back and forth. We're us!" I cried out.
"I would pick you over the world, Xander. I thought you'd pick me over a kingdom."
I sighed in frustration.
"You cannot seriously think I can do that! We aren't kids Aries, or in some movie. I just had to have a hand in killing my fathers mate! He couldn't be with her because he was king and she was a witch. There's elders to answer to! You don't think I get to pick and choose how my life goes as king, do you? If I don't think whats best for everyone I won't just lose my throne, I'll be killed." I tried to explain, suddenly spilling sacred secrets.
