Chapter 31
Xander's POV
Sharp repetitive ringing ran over and over in my ears as I backed up and left the hospital. People called my name back but I couldn't answer as I turned and headed straight for my car.
The keys weighed in my hand, allowing the car to flash showing it had been unlocked as I approached. I got in, unable to even glance behind me. Not when I started the engine. Not when I reversed out and not when Aries was chasing my car trying to stop me from leaving.
Eventually, the ringing subsided, leaving silence and a numb mind. I hadn't been able to breathe for a moment without everything going wrong, it was like I was some beacon for chaos.
I couldn't handle this. I was a broken king. One who couldn't have anything go right for it going wrong. I was not fit for this. How can I protect a kingdom of people when I can't protect myself?
When I can't protect Aries?
By nightfall, I reached the castle once again. I couldn't be bothered to park the car so I left it in front of the main entrance doors, engine still running, car door swung wide open as I ran to my mother who stood at the door, hand clasped on her chest.
And I collapsed. Right into her arms in a shaking heaving mess.
"I can't do this, I can't. Mother, I bring chaos and evil no matter where I step." I heaved out, unable to stand on my own.
"It's okay baby, It's okay. Let's head inside." She cooed as she helped lift me up and bring me inside, away from prying eyes.
She led me to her room, where we crawled into bed together, her arms circled around my shoulders cradling me as I cried into her shoulder.
"What happened Xander?" She asked, concern laced in her voice.
"Bella, she-" Struggling to talk, I took a shaky breath before continuing. "She's in a coma. They think black magic is the cause mother. I did this to her. I caused her to get hurt by being her friend."
"No darling, no. This isn't your fault. You didn't do this to her." Mother replied with so much love.
We sat there in the silence, stray sniffles being the only sound in the room as she was rocking me up until I fell asleep from exhaustion.
By the time I woke up, birds were chirping through the window and mother lay next to me, a cup of tea in her hand along with the news paper. The moment she saw me stir awake she placed both on her nightstand and helped me sit up. It felt like it was all a bad dream. One big bizarre bad dream until reality struck.
"Would you like to discuss last night?" She asked me carefully.
I nodded, knowing the situation wasn't due to leave my brain for a while.
"okay darling. Well, if what you are saying is true, that someone is attacking those around you in order to get to you then it is a must to withdraw contact from everyone. We can have guards monitor their safety from afar, make sure nothing is going wrong but we can't risk a bigger threat than what's been already placed before us. What if they try to go for your mate to get to you honey?" She explained, concern lacing her voice.
"I think you're right." I croaked out, thinking over her plan.
It made sense. The less people I was around, the less people this person could use against me. As for those in my life they could be kept safe. It was the safest bet.
"Would you want them to know why though?" She asked me.
"No." I replied after thinking. "Aries, god Aries would fight me on this, say he could keep us both safe and I'm sure anyone else would be willing to follow their alpha."
"Then it's settled. We will close the castle gates. We will isolate the world from us and us from them. Until we can settle this at least." She told me before pulling me in for another hug.
"Thank you mama." I mumbled, using the heels of my palms to rub the sleep out of my eyes.
Shortly thereafter, a guard had knocked the door and let himself in at mothers call.
"My king, Aries is waiting outside requesting to see you." The guard told me.
I screwed my eyes shut sinking into the sheets. I wanted nothing more that to run downstairs and hug him, kiss him, hold him. Anything. I needed him and I couldn't have him because I would hurt him.
My mother looked at me with sad eyes before asking the one question I wasn't even sure of myself.
"Are you sure you want to do this Xander?"
Did I? No. I never wanted this in a million years but this isn't what I wanted, this is what was needed. Aries had a pack to run and if anything happened to him, I would never forgive myself. I needed to keep him as safe as possible.
"Yes." I replied, the hardest word I've ever had to speak.
"Guard, close the castle gates. Welcomers will not be welcome from here on out including Aries." She ordered as the guards eyes widened but despite the shock, he nodded and left the room with a small click of the door.
"It'll be okay baby." She told me.
I nodded, crawling out of bed and walked over to the window. I could see the view of Aries yelling at the guard kicking up a fuss. What was said was muffled but he was throwing his arms in the air in frustration.
I think he felt my eyes on him because he glanced up at my window catching me staring.
"Xander!" I heard him yell.
I drew the curtains at this but left just enough of a gap that I could still see out without him seeing me. He then put his hands behind his head, kneeling over in front of his car in defeat before picking himself up and heading to the drivers side of the car.
With one last glance up at my window, he let out a sigh before getting into his car and leaving. However, watching him go wasn't what hurt the most.
It was the tears he angrily wiped from his eyes.
