There was a knock at the door and the man who's apparently my father opens it. I was putting the finishing touches on supper as Lennox entered our small home. We all sat down to eat dinner.

"This is delicious," Lennox comments as we started eating.

"Alice has always been magical in the kitchen, just like her mother," my father smiles at me, but I can't help but notice how his eyes droop at the mention of her.

"Her recipes always help," I say.

"Alice has told me of her passing, I am deeply sorry, sir," Lennox addresses my father and he just nods.

Apart from me knows he is not one to openly express his emotions, nor commonly speak of my mother.

"So Lennox, where is it that you are from?"

"I live a bit outside of town, but I am from the East. I traveled overseas a few months ago and settled here."

"And what is your profession?"

"Father," I disrupt his questions.

"It is quite alright, love," Lennox smiles at me and I feel the effect of it warm my body, "I recently started to practice medicine." He turns to my father.

"Impressive."

When we finished eating, I stood to gather the plates and other dishes. Lennox stood to help, but I denied it. My father led him and Lennox out of the room, while I started up with the dishes.

From where they stood, I shouldn't be able to hear them talk, but for some reason I do. I hear their voices perfectly, like the body I am in unaffectedly washes the dishes.

"What are your intentions with my daughter," father asks his voice harsh.

"I do not understand sir, I have no ill intentions."

"I can tell that a man like you has gathered some wealth, and you are a bit older than my daughter. I just want to ensure your intentions are pure."

"I have grown rather fond of her over the past month or so since our first meeting. I only want the best for her."

"I can tell you right now that you are not what is best for her."

"Excuse me, sir," Lennox is taken back.

"Alice does not need a man like you to waltz into her life and rustle it up. She does not need you."

"I have come to like Alice and I enjoy spending time with her, I will not leave her alone."

"You will do as I say because I am her father."

"Sir you cannot make me stay away from her, you do not understand."

"I can and I will," my father says in a stern voice.

A moment of silence passes, but then I hear Lennox say in a low voice, "you will accept me and allow me to continue seeing Alice." He says, his voice rid of any emotion.

Another beat passes with silence, "I am happy you were able to visit for dinner, Lennox. It was great to meet the man who my daughter is fond of."

"Thank you for having me," Lennox says. I finish the dishes and walk through the house to find them. It doesn't take long, for it is a small home.

"Well, I must be going," Len says as he sees me.

"I shall walk you out!" I say and my father walks away.
