Wolves are pack animals... this fact is widely known but in contradiction to popular belief, a pack is one entire unit. A unit dedicated on protecting and providing for each other.
A pack will fight for their members and provide help when needed.
Loners do not know the luxury of this.
A loner is on a constant move, starving and lost. Unlike the pack, he does not get to feast like they do, for when he tries to hunt the prey fight back, so he must go after the sick and weak.
The loner cannot afford to be injured, his legacy is all he has left and he's determined to live on.
Though, as time moves on the loner finds himself growing further and further from the pack's territory as he's slowly pushed out, so much so that he stumbles into another.
This pack catches wind of his scent, but they don't smell a threat, they smell a friend.
The loner takes a chance, deciding to stay with the pack for a while.
Time takes its toll and the loner becomes the leader... and he finds another loner, one like him.
His heart is swayed and he calls for her as the sun lowers itself over the forest covered mountain. She turns her head to look at him, eyes watching him carefully.
He takes a deep breath and relaxes, approaching her.
She backs away, he stops.
She finally builds up the courage to approach.
He's found his mate.
~*~*~
Night smiled as he followed Mare around while he paced in a circle. The frustration in the room was heavy but began to light up as Night attempted to engage in small talk.
A small sigh of relief hung in the air as Mare finally paused, answering a few of his questions. Who knew a wolf could cause so much damage in just a few hours.
Night giggled at the thought of the torn up chair. He approached Mare with a soft hum, gripping one of his arms. "Are you settled down now?"
Mare took a deep breath before laminating heavily, "I'm fine."
Night nodded, finally taking notice of the room around him. "Wow... you have your own bookshelf?"
Mare looked to where Night was looking and nodded, "Yes, I do, but it's starting to get old... a tragedy really. It's such a beautiful bookshelf."
Night went quiet, approaching the bookshelf. His eyes glancing over the various books and even movies, as his hand raised to brush against the dark oak wood. "Oh..." Night paused as his eyes landed on one of the movies, "The Last Unicorn?"
Mare let out a quiet snort and huffed, "I read the book and decided to watch the movie... do you want to watch it later?"
A pause of thought, "That sounds fun."
"Movie night it is then... you'll get to meet Epic and a few others tonight as well too but before that, come help me with dinner?"
Night perked up, nodding excitedly which ultimately led to Night bolting down the stairs. Mare following in a lazy tow.
When Night reached the newel of the stairs he looked back to see Mare trailing behind, a slight but soft smile on his face. The smaller grinned up at him, before finding himself in need to yawn.
Mare chuckled, finally catching up with the energetic smaller. His hand raised to pet his head only to pause when Night flinched. Mare froze.
It was a small flinch but it made Mare wonder, had Night been flinching since he got here? He wouldn't be surprised if he did, a new place can cause anxiety... but Night being so distrustful of Mare, it made his soul drop.
Night looked up at him with the same curious eyes he gave when he first saw the cake from the cafe. Mare sighed, dropping his hand on Night's head, to which the smaller happily leaned towards.
Did Night not realize that he had flinched, it being such a common occurrence. He smiled at Mare with closed eyes, leaning in deeper to his hand.
Mare hummed at his expression, pulling his hand back he started back towards the kitchen. Night followed like a puppy to which Mare smiled.
Night tilted his head in question, "What is it?"
"You..." Mare chuckled a bit, "You're like a puppy."
Night felt his cheeks heat up slightly, "A puppy?"
Mare nodded, moving towards the fridge to pull out some ground beef. Night, assuming the subject was dropped, watched; hardly being able to look over the counter. Curse being short.
The two still managed to work together, keeping Night's height in mind of course, Mare having him grab spices and other things.
"So, what are we making?"
"Meatloaf."
Night's head tilted, "So just a loaf of meat?"
Mare nodded.
"It's pretty big."
"We have a lot of people."
Night nodded softly, getting on his tip toes to see better. His eyes glancing up to see Mare's focused eye trained on making dinner, he decided not to disturb him with small talk. He instead opted to stand and watch, grabbing things when needed.
It was when the meatloaf was finally placed in the oven that Night finally realized the others had arrived.
"BRUH! Not cool!"
Night jumped at least a foot in the air.
"That's totally not radical broski."
"I don't believe I asked for your funking opinion!" Horror snarled at the new voice. Night let out what could only be a whimper as he gripped Mare's arm.
Mare chuckled, petting his head, noting another flinch at which he frowned but he did his best to ignore it. Instead he pulled his arm from Night's hold only to hold him close to his side. Night blushed at the affection, tugging Mare forward to have them move.
Mare nodded, leading the smaller out towards the living room.
"Yo! Nightmare, long no see bruh. Nice to see you."
Mare huffed at the acknowledgment of the colorful skeleton. "I can't seem to say the same, Fresh."
The colorful skeleton, Fresh, huffed at Mare's words. Night could only poke his head out from under Mare's arm, he was only spared a glance by the vibrant skeleton.
Night quickly turned his attention to Horror, who was heavily glaring at Fresh. He giggled a bit and slipped out from under Mare's arm, tugging at the taller's sleeve.
Horror turned to him, eyes softening slightly. He let out a simple sigh before petting his head gently. "So... what's for dinner?"
Night smiled softly, "Meatloaf! Why, are you hungry?" Horror nodded eagerly to which Night smiled, "Mare said it'll be done after we watch a movie!"
Mare smiled at that slightly, watching Night's expression grow brighter. While his body didn't trust the gang just yet, his mind certainly did, it was clear by the way Night wasn't afraid to show his true colors. He was comfortable... he was even unfazed by the glance Fresh had given him under his shades.
It's true Night had grown confident, but this was only due to Mare. The safety of being around Mare easily out matched his own brother's, he felt protected and cared for, a truly blissful experience.
Mare paused, scoffing at his own thoughts. Surely he's imagining things. He looked up to meet Fresh's unwavering and disapproving glaze, he glared at what that gaze implied.
A sudden and soft tug pulled Mare back into the real world. He looked to Night who looked almost nervous and uncertain. Mare become instantly concerned, "What's the matter puppy?"
Night blushed slightly at the nickname, "Um... I was wondering if we could start the movie?"
Mare chuckled softly at that, "Of course we can."
(Hahah soon bitches...)
