Zoya's pov.

"I don't know what Khan is looking for? I mean we've searched this place like a million times. That haveli is also barren there is nothing here."

"You're right, looks like Khan has gone crazy like that old lady in the haveli."

Two utterly pathetic voices. Quite literally.

What old lady?

Are they talking about Shafi mansion?

Who's there?

"I just hope whatever file that man is looking for he finds it. I don't even get it, why after a whole decade or so he wants to look into this?" The voices grew louder as the mud squished under their feet. They were still outside but near.

Very near.

My heartbeat sped up. There were two men here.

The worst of scenarios circled my mind as to what could happen. The last time two men encountered me here I lost my parents, what now?

Wrapping the file in Mama's dupatta I carefully tied it to my stomach to keep it plastered against me, covering it with my hoodie I tip toed to the broken windows. They were outside. The lights of this room weren't on so they couldn't possibly see me but I could see them.

Ya Allah help!

Securing the car keys in my hand and files near my chest, I picked up the revolver placed amongst the other things that were in the safe, I grabbed all of the files and envelopes and tried hiding them in my wet clothes as securely as I could without destroying them. I locked it back again and turned it around so that it looked untouched. I can't leave anything behind, what if they find it now.

Placing the hood over my head I glided against the rugged wooden floors trying my best not to make a sound.

I switched off the lights in main room and slid behind the couch placed nearest to the door. The dark was enough to camaflouge my black cloths against the dark wood of the cottage and the black velvet couch I suppose. I held my breath as now they stepped inside the cottage.

I prayed and prayed and prayed till they walked deeper into the cottage. Once they were out of my sight I made a run for it. I ran as carefully and as silently as I could but luck was not on my side. I bumped into a table making it scrape back and create a screeching noise.

"Who's there?" One of the men yelled. I froze for a second. My body went stiff and my hands around the files tightened.

I ran.

Yelling and footsteps followed me.

It reminded me of that night. My birthday night. All this while I enjoyed this day not knowing that this same exact day is my parents death anniversary.

Shame on me.

"Stop!" A man yelled. I jumped over a branch but slipped on the mud. I fell face first in the mud.

"Who are you and what were you doing in that cottage?" A man yelled hauling me up. My heart was racing badly from fear and from the adrenaline rushing in my viens.

A feeling of dread filled me from top to bottom.

What now?

How do I escape?

"Leave me" I fought against man's hold.

"Who are you?" He gritted his teeth and placed his gun on my temple. My breathing was getting sparsed. I froze temporarily. The cold metal against my equally cold skin sent shivers down my spine.

"I... I got lost in the woods" I tried lying but they didn't believe it. My hand went to the revolver that was placed safely in the pockets of my hoodie. I didn't know much about it but from what I've seen Einstein do I think I'll pass.

"What is a fine girl like you doing out in the woods all alone" He purred in my ear making me shiver in fear. His gun slid down my temple to my cheek and then to my neck, he stopped under my chin pulling my face upto face him.

"Leave me!" I yelled fighting his hold in me. I couldn't see him properly but I could feel his hands examining me through the fabric of my shirt.

"Why so soon? Let me take you home. Come on. I treat lost ones with extra care" he whispered in the now silent night. The storm had ceased as the silent clouds looked over us intently. The atmosphere was thick indicating another pour but for now it was a silent death sentence.

Fury blazed me and I pushed him back and pulled out the revolver that's was hidden in my hoodie's pocket.

"Back off" I pointed it at them. I don't even know if it works but I can atleast scare them off.

"Princess, these toy guns won't do you any good. Look here's a real one" he mocked with a sarcastic laugh. I did as I knew, loaded the gun it clicked like it's supposed to. He took a step forward but stopped hearing the tick.

"I'm telling you back off" my voice rang in the late hours of the night. I have to get out of here before a single ray of light escaped the horizon. They can't know my identity.

I started backing off but the man who held me first pounced forward. I did what mama did to save her honour.

I shot.

My eyes closed as the gun shot rang in the silence of the night.

I opened my eyes only to see the man groaning in pain clutching his arm, cursing my existence. My body shook as it registered to me that I have injured a man. The man's partner loaded his gun and was ready to shoot when I shot his shoulder. Lightening started to fill the place.

Both the men groaned in pain but I took that opportunity to run away. They kept yelling but I ran fast to my car. I quickly sat in the car and drove off without waiting for another second. I had to get away from here as soon as possible.

My hands shook as tears started pouring out. After driving into a far away neighborhood I parked at the side and I looked down at my muddy cloths. I took off the hoodie and was left in only my t-shirt. Cold seeped into my bones making me shiver badly. I untied the files from my abdomen. Mama's dupatta was ruined.

Wrapping it in my hoodie I tossed the both on the floor of the car. I hid the files into the cars safety compartment that's on the dashboard.

I placed my head on the steering wheel and let myself loose. I cried, I cried like I did when Ammi left me. When mama told me to run and find help for them and I failed them.

"If only I had listened to mama and had went to search for help. I could've saved them"

"What have I done?" I wailed loudly. My shoulders shook. I shook my head
Feeling the coldness of the weather chilling me to my bones. I kept on crying till I didn't have any tears left. My eyes had dried, the tears have dried and now emptiness was all I felt.

I kept sitting in the car for God knows how long. I couldn't move a single limb. My eyes begged me to close them and sleep but the fear of witnessing my parents horrifying screams and that night again. I couldn't.

My eyes found the clock on the dashboard and almost popped out of their sockets.

"How is it ten o'clock? Had it really been that long? Baba will be looking for me. It's past his time to go to office" I forced my brain to work. I didn't have my phone with me either.

I drove home expecting the least now that the worst of my life have been uncovered........
