Aurora
"Are you sure about this?" I nervously asked Harry. Did he really want me to drive his car? I didn't know much about cars, but I can tell this one was expensive just like his other ones. How many cars did he even have? I've been in three different cars of his so far. A black pick up truck, a white one I couldn't remember the name of, a blue Bentley and now this one, a gray Maserati. The Bentley has been my favorite so far. The interior of it was absolutely breath taking. I did not want to be held responsible for crashing this car. This was a risky move of him.
"You want your license do you not?" That I do. I was tired of taking the bus or walking to my destination. I couldn't go places I really wanted when I needed to be alone, not that I travel much anyways, but it would be nice to have the option without having to take the bus, walk or bother Odyssey.
"Okay." I pulled my seatbelt on and quickly adjusted the seat positioning and rearview mirror, seeing as how Harry was much taller than I was. "Put the car in drive and take us around the parking lot to the exit then onto the rode." I nodded doing just that. I exited the parking lot, going onto the rode, stopping at the red light.
"When the light turns green go straight some then pull over to the side so you can make a U turn back around." U turns were not my specialty. I had a lot of trouble with it and it was also one of the reasons I failed my drivers tests all three tries. Once the light had turned green I drove a few blocks down before pulling over to the curb. I switched on my left signal, looking through the mirrors to make sure no car was coming. I quickly turn the wheel all the way to the left, stopping so I don't hit the curb then put the car in reverse to back up. A car coming up behind me had started beeping a me, making me even more nervous then I was before.
"Ignore it. You have the right of way, just keep doing what you're doing." I nodded and continued to back up a little more. Once I was certain I backed up enough I put the car back in drive turning the wheel more to the left then drove off the opposite direction where we had previously came from.
"That was good. It was a little slow, but good. Next time try not to think much about it and do all the steps swiftly. You can avoid impatient pricks beeping at you that way. Also stop being so tense and nervous, just let the wheel roll onto your hand and you'll get the hang of it. Stop having such a tight grip on the wheel and moving it around so much because that can actually cause you to get in an accident. If the wheel is straight, the car will automatically drive straight without you having to move it around so much."
"Okay"
"Make a left turn back into the parking lot."
Harry told me to parallel park once we were back in the parking lot. Also one I struggled with. I suppose it was easier because there was no cars around. That wasn't the case when taking the actual drivers test. They made you park in between two cars with barely any space around.
"How does it look?" I asked him. He opened the door, poking his head out to see.
"Get closer to the curb next time or else you're going to get hit by passing cars." That makes sense.
"Do another U turn from here, then come back around the lot and parallel park once more."
I once again did the steps for a U turn. Once I felt I backed up enough I stepped on the gas.
He shifted in his seat, sitting more upright "Slow down."
I released the gas some in hopes to slow the car down. The U turn wasn't complete, I hadn't backed up enough.
"Try again" I put the car on reverse, backed up some, turned the wheel to the left then put the car back on drive. Harry had began shouting telling me to hit the breaks as I stepped on the gas making me lose control.
"Hit the breaks, you need to back up more!" Just as he said this the car had we on top of the curb. The car became silent the only noise heard being the sound of air leaving the now popped tire.
I nervously turn to look at Harry who didn't look too angry but also didn't look too happy. I didn't know what he was feeling, but I'm certain regret was definitely at the top of the list. I can't believe I just popped his tire.
"Next time back up more until there is enough space in front of you to move around. There was barely any space in front of you, that's why you crashed."
"I'm sorry"
He put the gear in park and told me to shut off the car. I did as told not wanting to upset him more than he already seemed to be. He got out the car, crouching down to examine the popped tire. I also got out of the car, going around to see that the tire was indeed flat. Harry removed his sweater leaving him in a white tee. He popped the trunk and pulled out a spare along with a tool box.
"Can I help." Not that I knew how to change a tire. I just felt guilty and wanted to do anything possible to ease the tension.
"I've got it."
Harry had spent almost an hour and a half changing the tire. The car had even almost rolled down by itself at one point. It was a scary and crazy experience, but the tire was now changed and we could head back home. I think it is safe to say that I should not be driving, especially not any of Harry's cars.
Harry once again got in the passengers seat leaving me baffled. Did he really want me to continue driving his car after what just happened? Why was the real question. I got in the car anyway.
"Take us back to your house and be careful when driving. Don't rush into anything."
"Got it."
