Most classes were easy grades, and the first week went smoothly, but of course professor Snape just had to assign an essay today of all days.

I sat in the Slytherin common room for a bit, trying to write but I couldn't. I wasn't exactly putting in the efforts for it.

"Did you see his face? Bet you Potter will get expelled for that!" A voice pulled my attention easily. I looked up and saw that Malfoy kid with two other boys. I rolled my eyes at this and scoffed audibly.

"Who are you?" The boy asked me.

"Someone who can kick your ass without even touching you. So shove off yeah?" I glared at the kid a bit and he seemed to get a little scared, then walked away. I then worked on my essay.

I sat in potions not even reading. Since Professor Snape had a mountain of papers to grade he just had us study the potions we'd be practising this week. I pretended I was reading but I was really half asleep.

"Miss L/n, please see me after class." I faintly heard Snape say. I knew it was him because no one else had that voice.
"And I shall hope you aren't sleeping in my class."

At this, I sat up and leaned back in my chair. "Sorry, sir," I said haphazardly.

But after that, I properly fell asleep.

I woke up to a loud smack and the feeling of an object hitting the back if my head. I sat upright and with a scowl.

"Good god you bloody bat!" I said rubbing my head.

"I thought I made it quite clear to not sleep in my class," Snape said bitterly, though everything he said was bitter. I looked around to find the class empty.

"Sorry..."

"Detention Ms L/n. For a week." I rolled my eyes and sat back.

"What did you want me here for Professor?" I said, already quite done with this song and dance.

"I wanted to talk about this lazy piece of filth of an easy you thought was appropriate to turn into me. Never have I seen such terrible work from you."

"I haven't been in the right mindset, okay?" I said with a hint of sarcasm and bitterness in my voice, which I could tell was just angering the Dungeon Bat more.

He made a face at my comment, but more one of confusion. "That... sounds bad." I admitted, I wasn't using anything, but that's how I made it sound. "Look I've got shit going on okay? I'll fix my grades or whatever but-"

"Language."

"Sorry." After that, I sighed and crossed my arms. "You know, I doubt you want me here any more than I want to be here so can I go now?"

"No. You're serving detention." I groaned at this while Snape walked back to his desk.

I looked at the paper he had placed on my desk and read it over, it really did suck. Not even the dumbest first year would wright something so heinous. I tossed the paper back on the desk and ran a hand through my hair. I just kind of stared at it, getting lost in thought.

"You daft bitch!"

A slap could be heard from downstairs.

"Fine then go! But at least say goodbye to your daughter!"

"I don't want to associate with you or your spawn!"

I didn't even realize I was crying until I had to sniffle. I wasn't crying hard either, they just kind of went on their own again.

"Ms L/N." I heard the voice but the words didn't register. "Ms L/N!"

"What?" I said looking at Snape, who was a lot closer than I thought. He pulled a chair over and put it in front of my desk, sitting down. Being up close like this really let me get a good look at him.

His black dead eyes actually had a hint of life to them. Granted, it was sad and miserable looking life, but still life. With a glimmer of hope. His face was something unique of its own. Aged and faded but still young. His hair didn't look as greasy up close, it actually looked quite soft. And there was a lingering scent of parchment, clean clothes, and pine.

"Perhaps you would find comfort in talking about your issues," Snape said in a softer voice than normal, which took me by surprise.

"To you?" I couldn't help but want to laugh.

"The fact that you've been acting like this has ever so slightly sparked some concern for you. You are still my student and your safety is something I need to be mindful of." He told me. I laughed barely. It was airy and more of just a quick burst of air from my lungs.

"Right." I shook my head and then looked at Snape. I leaned in the desk and looked him dead in the eye. "My private life doesn't concern you."

"It does if it affects your academic life," Snape said shortly, I could tell his patience was growing thin.

"No." I held my ground metaphorically. He let off a sigh and stood up.

"You are dismissed, but I expect to see you here after school tomorrow. Or I'll make it a full month of detention." He warned as he went back to his desk.

"Yes sir." After that I got up and walked away, closing the door forcefully behind me.

I made my way to the Slytherin common room and went straight to my dorm. I got changed into some comfier clothes. I walked back out to the common room and saw F/n.

"Oh, hey Y/n." I gave them a small wave and made my way towards the Great Hall to grab whatever food I could, I had actually been thinning out quite a bit.
