Chapter 25

In the interrogation room, Rogers showed Gothel the painting, Vivian had been told to go and Rogers promised to give her back her engagement ring later that day.

"My first painting and Adaline's engagement ring, happy now?" Rogers asked.

"It's a beautiful painting, the calm before the storm," Gothel said.

"Tell me about the killer," Rogers said.

"You don't get answers until you give some. Now, come here, look at the painting and tell me what it really means to you," Gothel said.

"Fine," Rogers sat in front of her then sighed, "As a child, I loved the ocean. I always wanted to visit, then I grew up, forgot about it and it's a distant memory, that's all," Rogers said.

"It must have been quite a day when you finally got out there, you must have felt like a real sea captain," Gothel said.

"Actually, I've still never been," Rogers told her.

"But the ocean's so close. I mean, why not grab your special someone and go touch the sea?" Gothel said.

"Because I don't have anyone! Is that what you want to hear?!" Rogers said.

"Yes, they say all great art starts with pain and now I know yours. The killer is also grappling with pain an unfillable void, if you will and just like you, they're looking for a way to express that pain, to externalise it in a way that only makes sense to them. Both the doctor and the baker were given a gift before they were attacked, a heart-shaped candy box filled with chocolate marzipan truffles," Gothel said.

"That's quite specific," Rogers said.

"Everyone has their obsessions. So, if you want to find the killer, all you have to do is follow your heart," Gothel said.

Flashback

Killian and Ahab meet on the street, Smee was standing by the mirror as Wish Vivian watched, still chained to the wall in her cell.

Smee presented both captains with the duelling pistols, "Ten paces then turn then shoot," Mr Smee said and the two captains stood back to back. Killian looked at Wish Vivian in the mirror and she looked at him, he couldn't shake the feeling of the other Vivian he saw in the portal. 

Wish Vivian mouthed to him, 'I love you' and he smiled a little at her which she returned.

Mr Smee then began counting, when each number was called out both captains took their ten steps, "One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine. Ten!" Mr Smee said.

The two captains walked the ten paces and turned to each other and shoot. When Killian pulled the trigger his life with Alice flashed before his eyes. The bullets both take both of them down.

"Killian!" Wish Vivian shouted.

Mr Smee ran over to his captain and saw that he was only nicked at the shoulder. He helped his captain sit up, "You're fine, sir. Just nicked which is more than I can say for Ahab," They looked to see Ahab was shot in the stomach, "He may survive the day, but your aim was true as the North Star," Smee said and saw Killian looking at Alice's chess piece, "What's the matter, sir? You did it, Captain! You won," Smee said.
