I never meant to be this late.

I was meant to go pick up Shay at eight o'clock like usual, but today I get held back by Jordan who insisted me to call an urgent meeting and I, stupidly thinking it wouldn't take more than half an hour, regretted almost immediately. It lasted almost two fucking hours. I checked the clock at least every five minutes to see how long I had left and when the clock struck eight my heart sank with guilt and regret, knowing I wouldn't make it there in time.

So when we finally declared the meeting over I never shot up out of my seat so fast in my life and rushed out of the pack house to my car. I didn't want anything more than to just see him, see his adorable curly hair on-top of his head and the adorable small frown he pulled when he was deeply concentrating on something.

But when I parked my car in the empty parking lot of the cafe I instantly smelled and saw that something was wrong.

For one, Shay was backed into the side of the cafe in front of a wall with a terrified look on his face and second, there was a brown wolf charging at him with the intent to kill clear in his eyes. That's when I jumped out the car, shifted and leapt through the window of the cafe just as the brown wolf was mid-air, ready to tear Shay to bits.

But the guilt hit me the hardest when a heard a loud whimper and a howl of pain from the smaller, beautiful light brown wolf that had protected me moments ago. Before his cries were silenced. My heart stopped as I glanced over and saw my mates wolf limp on the floor beside the enemy wolf's feet.

After that, I can only faintly remember what happened all I know is that I saw red and I didn't stop seeing red until I snapped each and every single one of these wolves' necks. Once I was satisfied with the enemy bodies around us I quickly mind-linked Jordan to get his ass over and investigate who these wolves were and what they wanted with Shay.

I shifted back into my human form and reached down with shaky hands to my unconscious mate, who was still in wolf form. I quickly checked for a pulse and I released a sigh of relief when I heard it loud and clear. I lifted him into my arms and made my way to my car, laying him down on the passenger seat beside me and driving back to the pack house. (Way faster than I should've been, might I add.)

When I arrived I didn't bother to stop and talk on the way to anyone as I held my smaller mate in my arms and raced up to the infirmary on the second floor of the house, naked as the day I was born. But that didn't matter, not now when Shay was profusely bleeding and very much unconscious.

So, now here I was, sitting in a plastic, uncomfortable chair that made my ass go numb after a while and waiting for Shay to wake up. It turns out that his injury was quite major and he had lost a lot of blood but luckily we got to the pack doctor in time and they fixed him up nicely. Now it was just a matter of time before he woke up.

But I wasn't exactly known to be a patient person and I think you could tell that by the way my leg constantly bounced up and down, my arms crossed around my chest and my usual permanent frown plastered onto my face.

There were so many questions going through my head. Was he okay? Is he in pain? How long will it take for him to heal? Who were those guys and what did they want with my mate?

I didn't have an answer for a single one of those but hopefully I'd be getting them soon. But my first priority was Shay. So I sat and stared at him, hoping and praying to the Moon Goddess that he would finally wake up and show me those pretty blue eyes of his.

I was on constant alert, every time anyone entered the room to check up on us I couldn't help but tense up, ready to jump anyone who posed as another threat. I even managed to accidentally growl at the pack doctor when he checked Shay's injuries. But who could blame me? That was my mate, who by the way was unmated and unmarked, so I didn't exactly appreciate it when another man started lifting up his shirt and touching him.
