"Th-they....th-they're gone..."

It felt as if your heart plummeted into the deepest depths of your stomach.

The quivering voice of your mother flooded into your ear canal as you dropped the pen you were holding.

"I....I-I'm afraid so, dear. Th-the doctor's tried everything after the a-accident, b-but..."

She continued to talk, but unfortunately it just went in one ear and out of the other. You couldn't believe it. (Best Friend's Name), was actually gone.

You both had been through everything together. They were the first friend you ever made. You remembered it like it was yesterday.

~Flashback to 8 year old (Your Name)~

"You ready for school, sweetie?"

Your mother smiled are she heard your little footsteps padding down the rickety stairs.

"S-sort of...there's a hole in the bottom of my backpack. And my stuff keeps falling out."

As you held out the old (favorite color) backpack(which was faded due to its extensive use)as a few pencils and erasers fell from the bottom of it. A small pout fell on your lips as the supplies clattered to the floor.

"Can you fix it?" You looked at your mother with hopeful eyes.

She gave a soft smile. "Of course I can."

After grabbing a needle and some thread, (Mother's Name) sat on the sunken couch cushions and began fixing the hole in your backpack.

You placed yourself beside her, silently watching her sew your backpack together.

(Mother's Name) quietly hummed to herself before glancing over at you.

"Everything alright?" She enquired, noticing the faint look of doubt on your face.

"I-I'm just nervous. W-what if I can't make any friends? How would I even start a conversation with someone?"

(Mother's Name) smiled, handing your backpack to you. "Just start with a casual 'hello'. You'd be surprised at how far a conversation can go with just one word."

"Just start with hello," you continued to mumble you yourself. "Okay! I think I can do that!"

Your mother smiled watching you excitedly grab your old backpack from the couch, running as fast as your legs could carry you to the car.

On the entire journey to school, you recited the phrase in your head repeatedly: 'just start with 'hello.' It seemed simple enough, and all of the possibilities for conversations were endless.

Flurries of butterflies swarmed in your stomach as the old car pulled up to the school building. A lot of children saying goodbye to their parents could be seen from your spot in the car, and other children ran to catch up with some of their old friends.
