My heart pounds against my chest as I run into the hospital. When I got the call that my mother was ill, my world stopped. A million questions still flood my mind as I'm lead into a small waiting room.
What did I do wrong? What happened to the treatment I paid for? Why is God letting her go?!
I pace in the waiting room with these thoughts. I hear Abi's footsteps and I quickly take a hold of her. My muscles yearn for her warmth. For her comfort.
"Hey my chef..." She rubs her hand on my back as she whispers this in my ear. My fearful tears escape my eyes at the feeling of her touch.
I let her hold me until I gently pull away and say, "I don't know what happened. They won't tell me. Abi...I'm scared..."
Abi wraps her warm arms around my waist again and I let her comfort me. "How long have you been waiting?" she says with worry in her eyes.
"Um...maybe twenty minutes or so." I wipe my tears and she guides me to a pair of chairs.
She never lets go of my hand. I then remember her condition and I put a light hand on her large belly. She gives me a warm smile, and she knows that his movements make my heart fly every time. So she guides my hand to where he is and I tenderly rub my thumb.
"I'm sorry if you were busy or—"
Abi does her sweet laugh. "Don't worry about it, baby. You called just in time."
Before I can ask her about this, we see one of my mother's nurses walk in. Wolf gives us a small smile and we quickly stand to get to him.
"Wolf. How is she? What happened?!" My body threatens to tremble but Abi's touch on my shoulder reminds me to stay strong.
So I put my arm around her waist and we both watch Wolf say, "What happened was that she fell into another cardiac arrest. The cancer in her blood seemed to have moved all over her body making her heart receive that contamination."
My heart is stabbed by this and I keep firm as I continue to listen.
"We sent her to surgery when we noticed a few tumors starting up in her abdomen because of her cancer. I...this is usually rare but it can happen."
And it happened to her.
I fight back tears as Wolf gives me a sad look. "Our doctors are doing the best they can. If you'd like, you can go home and we'll give you a call when—"
"No. I'm staying."
Wolf gives me a small nod when I say this and says, "We will let you know if anything happens."
If she dies...
Abi and I watch him give us one last nod before walking out. I numbly walk back to my seat and look at the ground in front of me. The white tile floor looks so dim compared to the bright lights reflecting on them.
But her soft touch on my shoulder brings that shine back to my world. I turn to look at her as she sadly sits by my side. I take a shaky breatheand fall into her chest with a sob. She tenderly holds me. The sound of her beating heart buries all the dangerous screams going on in my head at my mother's life.
Abi gently holds my face and says, "We can only hope for the best, okay? I will stay here. With you."
I wipe my tears and shake my head at her. "No. No. It might take a while and you need to be home. You need to rest up and—"
Abi gives me her quiet chuckle. "Blake. I'll be fine. I'm just carrying a little boy inside of me that likes to use my womb as a party house. I'll be okay."
