"It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed."
-Theodore Roosevelt♣♣♣
Joyce's mother took it hardest to learn her baby had dropped out of Emory University where she was studying to become a nurse. Often she blamed herself and tried to see where she went wrong. Had she forced her daughter into doing it? No. That wasn't it as Joyce had begged for her parents to support her dreams. When she was at the university she studied hard, kept her head down and behaved. Her professors had said they were pleased with her; often saying how she was naturally gifted with nursing. Amanda was stumped.
Being naturally gifted at nursing was rare to find and since Joyce had truly had a true interest in it she had put all her time and effort into it. A woman at the top of her class in a university was hard for men to accept. Perhaps they had given her a hard time and made her want to drop out only after a year.
Then Amanda had seen the letter addressed to her daughter.
Dear Joyce Fairclough,
We had taken into consideration your grades and also saw you had studied at Emory, for nursing. As you are top of your class it means your work is that of which is exemplary meaning you are one of the best students that Emory is able to produce.
Starting as of 1942, army officials and government want to put into place an experiment so you would call it. During this experiment we will train women alike with the hardest training we can provide for them to embrace them for the years to come when they are sent to the front lines. It may seem like a lot to take in but we believe that with your medical knowledge already and your speed of learning, that you are a suitable confidante for this training and would provide as a good field medic within the paratroopers.
This operation is completely private, only your family will be able to know about it as the public would highly disagree with what we are doing and it can risk a lot for both the government and army officials. So we ask you kindly to keep this news and this information private. Anyone who may attempt to spread it will be shut down and taken into custody.
Adding onto this, all your travel will be paid for as you will be staying in Fort Winchester under army supervision. This base is out of the way of the public eye so no one will be able to see that it is infact women they are training. Men for this training have been picked for their past services to the US aemy and they truly are the best of the best. We want to provide you with training which will help you hold out to the end of the war.
This being said it will be long days and nights of training and it will not be simply easy on you just because you are a woman. We will treat you the same as we are with the men as you will be recieving the same if not better training. It is your decision whether you wish to accept or not. If you accept, we look forward to seeing you train with us Joyce. Till then, keep studying hard.
The US government.
After reading the letter Amanda had flipped, Jack had calmed her down but they questioned their daughter about the letter once she had arrived back home to her parents. Questions such as how long had she had the letter, had she accepted, why she accepted, if she didnt care for them. It had broke Joyce to think that her parents didnt support her, but it broke her more to hear them ask if she didnt appreciate all they had done for her and if she truly didnt care for them enough to put her safety first.
Eventually, Joyce was able to explain the thoughts in her head as to why she wanted to go ahead with the operation. It was simply put that since her father had been a hero in The Great War, she wanted to carry on in his place. Bringing a new side to the war and providing women with a new light to be seen in the publics eyes. A whole part of her truly believed that once the war was over and she earnt her medals for participating that she and any other woman who survived would be a part of history and will change The United States Of America.
So when the day came she was on that train waving bye to her parents before headed off to a place a while away from home. With no clue what her future held for her, she clung to the chance of changing the minds of men and women in the public. Leaving was tough as not only was she leaving her parents but the man she was dating at the time also left her as he didnt agree with what she was doing. Doubts filled her head from this moment but she kept pushing. She wanted to be a change.
