The Sheperd's Crook is Bent
©12-20-2020, Olan L. Smith
Before the tree is felled,
Before the ax has chopped,
The birds will leave their home upon the fir
Evicted without cause, time does atone.
Before the tree is sent to Washington,
Before the lights are strung and tinsel hung.
Joy will light a nation, for a brief home is found.
People come from everywhere just stand and stare,
Who stands beneath the nation's Christmas Tree,
On December nights, will stand in wonderment
Of the perfect tree, and wonder, will peace and joy spring forth?
Is the tree's sacrifice one's hopes for family?
Carolers will sing their hymn of Christmas joy.
We see three King's approach the cradle,
For the King of kings was born in Bethlehem so many nights ago,
The shepherd's crook is bent.
(I use the style and form of Emily Dickinson for this poem)
