Death and Eternity
©2019, Olan L. Smith
Theory is all we have of the mysteries of death,
Hope of more thoughts, more self, more life,
An eternity of thinking, of being, of knowing
Not only you, but the universe. The I Am is
Above death's home, where all is, and shall be, but
Thanatos knocks on any door it chooses, so
Observe how swiftly it comes for you, and your
Stone etches the dates lost in the breeze.
At least hope is an eternity beyond the wind,
Inscribed in the stone is a movement of
Our life, measure upon human confidence; of
Notions, of thoughts shared in the blackness, and
In the depth of the host saying, "I am
Only for you, the hope of all is written,
Slashed on your spirit's forehead is, I AM."
