Jack

Germany

You awake?

Jack texted Nora, and took a swig of beer, crossing his feet on the coffee table.

Nora: Yeah.
Having fun with your bro?😊

Jack: Nah. He's a no show.😕

Nora: I thought you two were hanging out tonight.

Jack: I know. I've been sitting on my ass for three hours, but he hasn't shown up. I'm starting to panick.😨

Nora: Have you checked the club?

Jack: Of course. He wasn't there. He's not working tonight.

Nora: Your parents' house?

Jack: Not there either.

Nora: Don't panick. Maybe he's getting laid and forgot about you.

Jack: Ouch.

Nora: Kidding 😉

Jack: The thought crossed my mind too, but I have this bad gut feeling, you know?

Nora: You should call Marcia

I don't know. Jack was about to send that text when he heard the front door open.

Jack: No need. He's here.

Nora: Ok. Later J

Later

Jack looked up to see James walking into the cabin, and his heart stopped with worry, and fear.

His brother was a complete mess. His face was bruised all over. He had a black eye, and a busted lip, and also a cast on two of his fingers. If that wasn't bad enough, he was clutching his chest which meant he had broken ribs.

Jack put the beer bottle down, and shot up to his feet. "Jamie, what happened? Who do I have to kill?"

"No one. I'm fine." He tried to walk past him.

Jack grabbed his face, and made James look at him. "Who did this to you?"

James avoided his eyes and pushed him back. "Jack please don't start. I'm not in the mood."

"Was it Ada?" Jack hoped it wasn't, because then he would rip her apart, and that would complicate things with Nora.

"No. What gave you that stupid idea?"

"Tell me who did this."

"Some assholes who wanted to steal my bike. Stop fussing over me. I'm not a kid anymore."

"You're lying." Jack had raised him. Did James really think he could lie to him?

"Then stop asking questions." James walked towards the stairs, and started climbing them slowly.

Jack followed. "Don't you trust me?" Looking at his little brother's ruined state made Jack's blood boil.

Why couldn't people just leave him alone?

"Of course I do." James opened the drawer, and took out a grey T-shirt, and sweatpats.

"Why aren't you telling me what really happened? We tell each other everything. We always have."
