Bucky's eyes were wide in shock, he kept looking from the giant icicle in the wall next to his head back over to me where a soft dusting of snow had covered my hair and shoulders. I guess it wasn't everyday a girl from the future attacks you with an oversized icicle. Steve on the other hand had broken out into laughter after seeing the look on his best friend's face.
"She got you good Buck, she did tell you she had powers. Do you believe her now or do you want to be frozen to the wall next?"
I couldn't help but start to giggle as Bucky inched away from the icicle and looked at me with a small amount of fear in his eyes. He finally stumbled his way over to a worn-out arm chair and fell in to it. He kept looking at me as I sat back down next to Steve and brushed the small amount of snow that has fallen on him during my little outburst on to the floor.
"Ok, I believe you. Just please don't kill me," he pleaded. "I was never going to kill you; I couldn't kill anyone. I just wanted to prove a point. You can probably guess it's been a very stressful couple of days for me," I told his as I leaned back on to the couch and ran my hands through my hair getting rid of the last of the snow. Steve put his hand on my thigh as I felt the tears start to build up in my eyes.
"How about we start over, no doubting anyone. I arguments, just be honest and trust each other. How does that sound to you guys? You ok with that Bucky?" Steve asked the both of us. I smiled and nodded as I looked over at Bucky. He held his hand out for me to shake, "The names James Buchanan Barnes but you can call me Bucky." I shook his hand and smiled back at him. "I'm Kimberly Odinson, it's nice to meet you Bucky."
Bucky offered to go out and get something for dinner as it was starting to get dark and Steve didn't have enough food in his apartment for three people. I was then I realised how much of a struggle it was living during the war. Everything was rationed, because of the Great Depression so many people didn't have jobs or were working odd jobs just to get the smallest amount of money just to eat. Steve told me he was currently working in a metal factory that was building ammunition for the looming war and that he wanted to join the army but he couldn't because of his medical records.
"There is so much I could tell you that happens in the war Steve, but only if you want me too," I said to Steve as I helped him set the plates out for dinner. At first, he wouldn't let me help, but after I kept insisting, he finally let me help. It was only then I actually noticed how much taller I was. I had to have around 4 inches on him, but honestly that didn't matter to me. "Part of me would love to know what happens but something tells me that won't be a good idea. I mean, I've read a lot of stories and it never seems to end well when someone tries to prevent something from happening."
He had a point; I mean it was the bases for the entire Back to the Future movies. But I couldn't help but think what was going to happen in a few months' time in Pearl Harbor, about all the people that were going to die and the men still trapped in the Arizona in 2003.
"I know Steve, but I can't help but think about all the lives that could be saved if I said something," I said as I reached up to get three glasses out the cupboard that Steve was struggling to reach. He blushed as I handed them to him and I couldn't help but feel butterflies when he smiled at me. "I know it's hard Kimberly, but who would believe you if you told them. I mean they would probably put you in hospital because of it." I sighed as I sat down at the table, I knew he was right but I still felt like I wanted to do something. My memories of my Pa telling me about the few months he spent in a POW camp until he was rescued played on my mind. He still couldn't talk about what happened to him.
"I know your right, but I want to do something. I have a feeling I may be here for a while, at least until I can either find the man with the glowing cube or get back to Norway and find a way to get in contact with anyone from Asgard. But considering its currently under Nazi occupation, so that's not going to happen anytime soon. And I just don't want to waste my time, I want to do something productive."
"Well, doll that's going to be easy as you have no identification as to who you are," Bucky said as he walked in and placed the food down on to the small kitchen table. Steve started to unpack the food that Bucky had brought in and had a worried look on his face. "How did you afford all this Buck, it must have cost a fortune," he said as he pulled out three burgers with fries. Bucky gave him a small smirk and ruffled his best friend's hair. "Let's just say the girl who works down at the dinner is a good friend of mine and owed me a favor."
Steve rolled his eyes and looked over to me and smiled. Something told me that Bucky was a bit of a player and it really didn't surprise me, there was no doubting he was an attractive guy with his blue eyes, dark hair and crooked smile. But something in me said it would prefer the 5'4 blonde with the kind smile sitting next to me.
"There has to be some way for me to do something. I mean I needed to get a job and find somewhere to live at the very least," I said as I started to pick at the fries on the plate in front of me. I knew there was no way I could survive without a job or place to live and the realization of my situation was starting to hit me.
"You don't have to worry about a place to live Kimberly, I have a spare room here. It was Ma's but she would be more than happy if you were staying in it," Steve said to me like it was already a given that I was staying with him. I knew what a big sacrifice it would be for me to stay with him, men and women did not live together unless they were related or married in the 40's. It would be scandal if anyone found out.
"I couldn't impose on you Steve; you have already done so much for me and I don't know how I will ever be able to repay you. I know how people would talk if you suddenly had a girl living with you and I couldn't put you through that."
"You don't have to worry about me Kimberly, I really don't care what people think of me. They already talk about me behind my back because of my medical conditions so it really won't bother me at all. You have nowhere to go and don't know anyone, I'm not going to kick you out on to the street. Besides it will be nice to have so company since this idiot is always out on a date with a different girl every other night."
The two us bickered back and forth for a couple of minutes before Bucky started laughing. "Look at the two of you arguing like an old married couple. Just agree to stay here Kimberly, it's going to save a lot of time because I can tell you that Steve here is not going to take no for an answer. Besides, with your powers I don't think it's the best idea for you to be wandering around the streets."
I knew that they were both right, so I finally relented and agreed to stay with Steve only if he would let me do the house work and help me find some kind of a job. We spent the rest of the night talking and laughing as they tried to take my mind off what had happened. It was at that moment I knew I had found two people that I could count on and that I trusted completely.
