Steve's POV

I was alone in the barracks that night packing up my things, getting ready for the next day. I was still in shock that I had actually been chosen for the serum. Part of me was scared, thinking about if it went wrong and how Kimberly would feel if anything happened. But the other part of was excited that I was finally able to do something to help.

I was putting the copy of The Wizard of Oz my mother had given me before she died away when I heard a knock at the door. I looked up as Kimberly walked in looking very much like she did on the first saw I saw her. She was out of uniform with a white dress on and her hair down around her shoulders.

"How are you feeling?" she asked quietly as she sat down next to me and took hold of my hand.

"Shocked and a little nervous. But you know everything is going to work out, right?"

She was looking down at her feet and she nodded as a single tear feel down her cheek.

"Angel, what's wrong. You know you can tell me anything."

She looked back up at me and her eyes were filled with tears. It broke my heart that she was like this and I knew it was all because of me.

"Did I ever tell you what type of doctor my mother was," she asked as her voice quivered with every word.

When I shook my head, she took a deep breath and told me.

"Mama started her medical career as a normal doctor, but quickly got her masters in medical science. She works for a company called Oscorp, which is a rival to Stark Industries oddly enough. She worked at Vanderbilt hospital in the research division and specialized in gene mutation. In about 20 years' time a new type of human is going to be discovered, but they have been around forever and a day. They will be known as mutants, which is the main reason that I always hid what I could do growing up because I didn't want to be known as a freak. These so-called mutants have different abilities from mind reading to shape shifting and so much more. Norman Osborn was horrified when he found out that there were other organisation's that were experimenting on them to extract their powers and give them to others. So put together his own team to research the mutant gene in hopes to protect them. My mother leads the group alongside a woman called Jean Grey, who is my age and absolute genius. One day Mama asked me to bring her files to her at her office as she had left them at home. So, I made the two-hour drive into Nashville to give them to her. When I walked into her office, I saw what her and Jean had been working on. A group of people had come to them after a failed attempt to give them mutant powers and it was horrible. So many died and I can't even bring myself to think about what happened to the rest. I know Dr. Erskine's serum is nothing like what is happening to the mutants but I can't get the image of what happened to those people out of my mind."

By the time Kimberly had finished, she had tears streaming down her face. I finally understood why she never wanted to talk about the serum, it reminded her of what she had seen. I knew that she had absolute trust in Dr. Erskine and it there was any chance that is serum was like what had happened to those poor people she wouldn't be here and that she wouldn't let me go ahead with tomorrow. But I could also understand why she was worried as well; she knew the risk of the procedure and what she had witnessed only made it worse. So, I did they only thing I could, I pulled her close to me and let her cry as I held her.
