Steve's POV
From the moment that I woke up in the morning I felt nervous. I was pacing around the empty barracks when Peggy came to get me. I had nothing against Peggy, she was a kind and caring person, but I wished it was Kimberly that I was making the trip with. That was probably how I ended up making awkward small talk with her as we drove to the location of the Dr Erskine's lab."I know this neighbourhood," I said as we made our way through Brooklyn. "I got beat up in that ally. And that parking lot. And behind that diner."
"Did you have something against running away?"
"You start running they'll never let you stop. You stand up, push back. Can't say no forever, right?"
"You must have worried Kimberly so much when you came home after a fight."
I didn't answer straight away as I looked out the window and remembered the first time Bucky brought me back home after a fight to Kimberly. She was cleaning the kitchen when we walked in and as soon as she saw me, she dropped the cleaning rag that she was holding. At first, she was angry that I had gotten in to a fight but after I explained to her how a bunch of guys were picking on a teenage girl she understood. From that day on she never made a scene when I came home bloody, she just cleaned my cuts and listened as I told her what had happened. I knew she worried, but I she knew there was no way that I could stand by and let bullies get away with their actions.
"I'm sure I did but she never showed it. She was always so gentle when she cleaned me up and never lectured me like Bucky did. I have no idea what I did to have someone like her in my life but I'm sure glad that she is."
Peggy looked over at me with a small smile on her face as I continued t0 tell her about all the times that Kimberly helped me and argued with Bucky about me standing up to people. She was truly the only person who never doubted me, even when Bucky questioned me Kimberly never did.
"You really love her, don't you?"
"More than you will ever know."
