We had been set up in the London headquarters for a few weeks and I still couldn't get the image of the boy begging for his mother out of my mind. The look on his face haunted my dreams every night. Both Howard and Peggy had noticed how quiet I had been, but didn't know what to do to get me out of the rut that I was in. The worst part was I couldn't even wright to Steve. I had found out form Peggy that the senator had him doing a USO tour around the states and he was in a different city every few days which meant any letter I wrote to him would arrive at the wrong location.
I had been living in my office, surrounded by Abraham's notes and all my research on Norse mythology. I had no doubt in my mind that Schmidt had the tesseract, but couldn't find out what he was doing with it. He wouldn't be able to touch it without it killing him, so what did he want with it. What scared me the most was the thought that he had somehow found a way to weaponized it. If he did, he would be able to wipe out our army within seconds.
I sighed as I leaned back in my chair. All our offices were underground to protect them in case of a bombing, but I missed the sun. It had been a few days since I had stepped outside the headquarters and I figured it was time I actually went outside. I left a note on my office door, telling anyone who came looking for me that I had gone out to get some lunch.
I managed to avoid Howard and Peggy on my out, as I really didn't want any company. I just wanted to be able to be alone with my own thoughts without anyone asking if I was ok. Because I wasn't ok, I had to leave Steve and walked into the living nightmare that was living in a war zone.
I walked the cobble stone streets, not even thinking about where I was going. This part of London had escaped the bombing raids so far and most of the businesses were still open. It was crazy how the people in the city managed to carry on with everyday life. I guess if they didn't, the whole country would come to a stop.
After a few hours of aimless walking, I heard someone call out my name. I turned around to see who it was to see Logan running to catch up with me.
"Well, if it isn't the one and only Major Logan Alden, how you been," I asked as I hugged him. I had forgotten how tall he was, he even had a few good inches on Steve.
