Evan was always a small kid, growing up with severe social anxiety and depression didn't help.
His Mommy and Daddy were always there for him though, helping him through every panic attack and intrusive thought.
Until they started fighting...
It was small things at first, disagreeing on what movie to watch, why they didn't do the dishes.
Then it got worse.
His Daddy got frustrated and mad at Evan, since he was taking up so much of Mommy's time.
It was all so overwhelming that Evan decided to shut up for good. He pulled away from his parents and never spoke a word unless...
His Daddy threatened him.
Things only spiraled more out of control when his Daddy started coming home drunk, he would threaten to hurt Mommy if he didn't stay quiet.
As scared as he was, he obeyed. His Mommy still got hurt, but Daddy would always say it could be worse.
...then Mommy left.
Evan still remembered waking up to the screaming, the cursing, the sounds of glass breaking and doors slamming shut. Hesitantly, the small boy made his way downstairs, glancing out the kitchen window.
What was a truck doing in the driveway?
Evan could see his parents arguing infront of it, glaring darkly at each other.
At the time Evan didn't understand what was happening, just that Daddy slapped Mommy really hard and walked off.
Quickly he ran to the door, throwing it open.
"M-Mommy?!"
Her head immediately turned, wavy hair that use to be filled with the sun itself, was withered and limp.
"E-Evan..." He hadn't spoken a word in months.
"O-Oh Evan I'm so so sorry..." She cried, falling to her knees. The boy ran up and threw his arms around her.
"M-Mommy..."
She took a stuttering breath, pulling away gently to cup Evan's cheek.
"I'm so so sorry Evan, you don't deserve this... But there's nothing I can do..."
"..w-what?" His voice was so small, so pitiful, drowning in his tears.
"I can't do this anymore."
...what?
"M-Mommy-"
"Go inside and- and get our music box. Open it, and let it take all your worries away."
Not wanting to distress his mother further, he did exactly what she told him to, quickly turning towards the house and bolting off.
Their music box, his Mommy and him built it. She told him that all his wishes were kept safe in it. They would spent hours wishing and wishing, knowing everything was in a safe place. Mommy never let him open it because she said it was super special.
Locating the box, Evan grabbed it carefully and jumped onto his bed.
The blue's and silvers swirled together from Mommy's steady hand. His finger print messily pressed in next to his mother's. It was a dark blue Evan added after his Mommy painted the tip of his nose in paint.
Taking a deep breath, he unlatched the lid and opened the box.
"Evan..."
Mommy's voice filled the room, the small boy looked at the box in shock. Her voice sounded in so much pain.
Outside he could hear the sound of the truck leaving but didn't pay any mind.
"I made this recording for you, my perfect, beautiful little boy... Evan, my little man, so brave in your own way and such a gift to this w-world."
Small hiccups followed, breaking Evan's heart further.
"I-I- couldn't do anything to get you away from this place. They wouldn't listen and- and- oh I'm so sorry Evan..."
He didn't realize the tears rolling down his cheeks, his own hiccups leaving him.
"I love you, I love you so much, my b-baby boy you are so precious to me. We made this box together! Something so beautiful and gorgeous. Never give up, be strong, and be yourself. Don't lie, be truthful and upfront. Evan I love you n-never forget that."
The crack in her voice snapped Evan out of his head, darting to his feet. Clutching the box close to his chest.
Racing back out of his house with tears streaming down his voice as he screamed for his Mommy.
The truck was gone...
Evan fell to his knees, screaming. His throat hurt, having not been in use for several months, but that didn't stop him.
He begged for her to come back, to take him with her.
Evan didn't know how long he spent on that driveway, he only noted that Daddy came home stumbling towards him with a hard glare.
"Get. Inside. Now."
