THE FIRST time Jughead stayed over at your house, he was expecting a quiet night—some late-night snacks, cuddling on the couch, and maybe falling asleep to a classic movie. What he didn't expect was to wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of muffled cries.
He blinked groggily, his heart racing as he registered the sound coming from your side of the bed. Turning to face you, he saw the tension in your body, your hands gripping the sheets, your face twisted in distress.
"Y/N?" he whispered softly, placing a hand on your shoulder.
You flinched at his touch, waking with a start. Your wide, tear-filled eyes met his, and for a moment, you looked utterly lost.
"Hey, hey," he said gently, sitting up and reaching for your hand. "It's me. You're okay."
You wiped at your face quickly, embarrassed. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you."
Jughead shook his head, his brows furrowed with concern. "Don't apologize. What's going on? Bad dream?"
You hesitated, biting your lip. "Something like that. I've been having them for a while now... but it's not a big deal."
"It is if it's upsetting you," he countered, his voice soft but firm. "Talk to me."
You sighed, pulling your knees to your chest. "They're just... memories, I guess. Stuff I can't seem to let go of. Sometimes it's old fears, sometimes it's things I wish I could've done differently. I wake up feeling like I'm still stuck in it."
Jughead's heart ached at the vulnerability in your voice. He reached out, brushing a strand of hair from your face. "You're not stuck, Y/N. You're here, with me. Whatever it is, you don't have to go through it alone."
You looked at him, tears threatening to spill over again. "I didn't want to tell you because... I didn't want you to think I was weak."
He frowned, shaking his head. "Weak? Y/N, you're one of the strongest people I know. It takes strength to keep going, even when your mind won't give you peace. And it takes even more strength to let someone in."
His words broke down the walls you'd been holding up, and before you knew it, you were leaning into him, letting the tears fall freely. He wrapped his arms around you, holding you tightly as if to shield you from the nightmares.
"I'm here," he whispered, his voice steady and reassuring. "Whenever it gets bad, you wake me up. I don't care if it's the middle of the night or every night. I want to be there for you."
You nodded against his chest, his warmth and steady heartbeat grounding you. "Thank you, Jug."
He pressed a kiss to the top of your head, his hand rubbing soothing circles on your back. "You don't have to thank me. We're a team, remember?"
For the first time in a while, you felt like you weren't fighting this battle alone. And as you drifted back to sleep in Jughead's arms, the nightmares felt just a little less powerful.
