"I'm going to take you to my house tonight and we'll see where you can stay tomorrow, okay? Come, let's go. It's late" I took her hand and she followed me out.

"Good night, Amelia" Peter called after us.
Of course, she didn't reply.

The drive home was silent. The same silence on the way to the police station.

"Buckle up, sweetie" I said to her, as she sat down in the police car.

"We're gonna figure out everything for you, okay? You don't have to worry about anything"
She just looked out of the window and didn't say anything.
I let her, though. She wasn't up to talking, yet. She needed a little more time.

"Okay, we're here" I said.
She slowly got out of the car and followed me to my front door.
I opened it and Drake greeted me.

"Hey, babe" he kissed me.

"Hi" I kissed back.
I pulled away remembering Amelia standing awkwardly behind us.

"Drake, this is Amelia. Amelia, this is my husband, Drake" I introduced them.

"It's nice to meet you, Amelia" Drake smiled at her.
She didn't even look at him.

Drake gave me a questioning look.

"I'll explain later" I whispered.

"Come, let's get you to bed" I took her hand and led her upstairs to the guest room.

"You can take a shower if you want. The bathroom is right there. I'll bring you something you can wear as pajamas" I said, realizing she didn't have anything.
I took out and old shirt and sweatpants from my closet and gave it to her.

"Good night, Amelia" I said, before closing the door and walking back downstairs.

"So, who's that?" Drake asked.

"Her name's Amelia Adams. She's thirteen years old. Have you seen the news tonight?"

"She has something to do with the shooting?"

"Yeah. It were her parents and brother that were shot. They didn't survive. We took her to the station, to find her a place to stay, but it's too late to put her in a family now. We have to wait till tomorrow, so I decided to have her sleep here tonight. I hope you don't mind"

"No, that's fine. I feel so bad for her, though. Doesn't she have other family?"

"Only an old grandma, that lives in an old age home"

"How did she take the news?"

"She's gone mute. She hasn't said a word to anyone, since I told her"

"Poor girl"

"Yeah. How was Corey tonight?" I inquire about my four year old son.

Two days a week, I worked till late at night and would miss having dinner with my family and bringing Corey to bed.
Today was one of them.

"He was good" Drake smiled.

"Good. Let's go to bed. I'm tired"

"Okay"

We walked upstairs together and went to our room. On our way, I went to check on Corey. He was sleeping cutely in his bed.
I decided to check on Amelia, as well. She was laying on the bed, still in her own clothes, and she was sleeping. She looked so peaceful. I wish she would soon feel like that when she was awake, as well. Poor girl.

I went to bed and fell asleep, only to be woken up in the middle of the night by someone's crying.
