"Hi sweeties"We both jumped up and looked at Demi standing in the doorway, with an amused expression on her face.
"You scared us" Corey pouted.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. Where's daddy?"
"He went to a meeting. He's almost gonna be home, right Amelia?" Corey asked me.
I nodded."Oh, okay. You can continue playing now. I'll call you down when dinner's ready" she turned around and walked back downstairs.
Hey, wasn't she supposed to work late today?
Whatever.I turned back to my game with Corey. We continued playing for another half an hour, till Demi called us down for dinner.
"Hey daddy. When did you come back?" Corey asked Drake, who was sitting on the couch.
"A few minutes after mommy did. Did you realize something, baba?"
"No" Corey frowned.
"Mommy came home early today. We're having dinner together with her. And Amelia, of course. But mommy want supposed to be here, yet"
"Then why is she?"
"Cause I asked her to come home earlier"
"Why?"
"Cause I like spending time with her. Don't you?"
"Yeah, I do too. But if she has to work, then you always let her"
"Yeah, but today is a special day"
"Really? Why?"
"Cause today, five years ago, we found out that you were gonna be born"
"Really?" Corey's eyes got big, as a smile came across his face.
"Yep. Five years ago, today, we knew we were gonna have a baby. That we were gonna be parents to a beautiful kid of our own"
"Please don't tell me you did something special today" Demi groaned, as she came out of the kitchen to the living room, scaring Drake a little.
It reminded me of mom and dad."Kids, come here a second" dad called us to the couch.
We sat down on both sides of him."Do you know what today is?" he asked.
We both shook our heads."Today is the day your mommy and I went on our first date"
"Oh" Lucas replied.
"That's not just 'oh', Lucas. That's cute" I said.
"Thank you" dad laughed.
"So, why do you tell us?" Lucas asked.
"Cause I want you two to be extra good to mommy, today. She's been working really hard and today is a special day, so I want you to show her that you can be good kids. And I have a little present for her and I want you to give it to her, okay?"
"I told you not to buy me a present" mom complained, as she entered the living room, scaring the three of us.
"Hey, were you listening to our conversation?" Dad chuckled.
"Of course I was and I don't approve"
"Hey, were you listening to our conversation?" Drake asked. Dad's exact words.
"Of course I was. I wanted to know why you wanted me home too, you know. You never told me"
"Well, now you know"
"So that's the reason? Cause it was five years ago that I took that test?"
"Yep. I just wanted to spent some special time with you and show you how much I love you. And give you something special" he whispered the last part.
"You can do that without giving me presents, you know. There are other ways to show people you love them"
"Demi, there are kids around" Drake scolded.
"Not in that way, you pervert" she laughed.
"Oh, sorry" he blushed.
"I meant, like for example just talking with that person and telling that person what she means to you. Or just spending time with her. You know, just sit at the table with some candles, drinking tea or something. You don't have to waste money, to show someone love"
"I know, but I like doing both. Without money and with money. Everyone has their own ways"
"But I don't get why you insist on getting me something, when I don't need it. Why not wait till something breaks, and I need a new one, and then just but it? If you're always gonna buy me expensive gifts, we're not gonna have money for when the washing machine breaks, for example"
"Is that washing machine broken?" Drake asked.
"Not yet, but it'll probably die pretty soon. It's been leaking a little"
"Oh, okay. Good to know. Anyway, don't worry about it. We have enough money for me to buy you a present without having to worry for other stuff"
"I know, I just don't think it's necessary for you to go through the trouble of buying me something, when I don't need it"
"Demi, it's not trouble. I love buying you stuff. I do it with pleasure. And today was even better, cause I had a special someone to help me" he smiled at me.
"Who?"
"Amelia, of course. Who else?"
"You helped him buy me a present?" she asked me.
I nodded."And you couldn't tell him not to buy me anything?"
I shook my head."Well, I would've appreciated that a lot" she chuckled, "But don't worry. I appreciate the fact that you went through the trouble to buy me something, also. Even though I still don't think it's necessary"
"Mommy, why don't you want a present? Presents are fun" Corey was confused.
"Yeah, bubba, they are. But sometimes people buy you stuff you don't need"
"So? That's even more fun"
"Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. Anyway, let's have dinner. I'm hungry" she turned back to the kitchen.
