"You must be tired. Do you wanna go lay down. We have a bed here and you can sleep there, till we have it all figured out. Don't worry, we won't leave without you" the police officer tried again.
But again, I just shrugged my shoulders and didn't move."Leave her alone a little, Peter. Give her a little more time to let the information sink in. It's not easy" I heard a lady say to Peter, the police officer that kept on taking to me.
The lady was the police officer that stood at our front door.
The one that brought me here.
I forgot her name, though."Come here, sweetie. I think it's better for you to stay in this room, where it's not so busy and people can't just come in, okay? You can go to sleep, if you want to, but you don't have to" she led me to different room with a bed, a table and a chair. There was also a shelf with books.
"This room is for when we have cases like yours" she explained, "you can read a book if you want to. You can also eat or drink whatever you want from the little fridge there" she pointed to a little fridge in the corner of the room, that I hadn't noticed yet, "If you need anything, just call me or Peter, okay?"
I nodded and she left the room.
"Poor girl" I heard her say, "I can't imagine what I would do in her situation"
"She's gone mute" Peter said.
"Yeah, it's probably very hard for her"
I walked over to the shelf and looked through the books. Might as well read a book, right? I have nothing better to do, anyway.
I saw a children's book. Lucas' favorite.
Oh my Lucas, how I wish I could read it to you, now."Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear Lucas. Happy birthday to you" I sang, as I tried to wake him up.
Today was Lucas' sixth birthday.
"Good morning, sleepy head. It's your birthday!" I smiled, as he opened his eyes.
"Good morning, Amelia" he smiled back.
"Come on down. Mom has a special breakfast for you"
"Okay, okay. I'm coming"
We walked down the stairs together.
"Happy birthday, baby" mom kissed his forehead.
"Good morning, birthday boy" dad smiled, as we entered the kitchen.
We all ate breakfast together."I have something for you" I jumped, as soon as we were done eating.
"A present?"
"Yep. A birthday present"
"Where is it?"
"Here, I'll go get it" I ran to my room and got the present. I walked back downstairs.
"It was actually mom's idea, but I payed for it, so it's still my present, right?"
"Yeah, it's yours" he smiled, as he opened it.
It was a book. The one he'd seen in the store and wanted mom to buy for him."Yay. Thank you so much!" he hugged me.
"You're welcome, bud" I smiled.
"Will you read it to me?"
"Now?"
"Yeah, why not?"
"Okay, sure" I smiled, as I took the book and started reading it to him.
It was his favorite book ever since. Even though it was a book for little children and he was already ten, he still liked it.
I was never gonna be able to read it to him anymore, though.
Oh, how I wish I had just one more chance to read it to him. Just once.I just stood there staring at it, as I let a tear roll down my cheek.
