*Police officer's POV*"So, what do we do? I don't think anyone's gonna take her tonight, cause it's already late" Peter said.
"Maybe I can take her home tonight and we'll figure it out tomorrow. She has to come back here anyway, to get everything else arranged and we're gonna have to take her to the house, so she might as well spent the night at my house and I'll bring her in tomorrow" I suggested.
"Yeah, I guess we can do that. Poor girl, I feel so bad for her"
"Yeah, me too" I thought back to what happened to her.
"We have an emergency case going on here" someone yelled.
We all ran to him to see what was going on."There's a guy with a gun that shot three people, as they were leaving the local hospital. We have to go over there quick and see if we can still catch him. We also have to question these people, if they're still alive" he ordered.
He assigned me and three other officers to go check it out.
We all ran to our cars and were off to the hospital."He's gone. He left as soon as he shot" one of the witnesses said.
"And where are the people that got shot? Do you know who they are?"
"It looked like a family, I guess. It was a man, his wife and their son, I think"
"They're inside?"
"Yeah, in the ER"
"Okay, thank you" I ran to the emergency room, hoping they were still alive.
"No, the wife and son died and the husband has very little chance of survival" the doctor said, sadly.
"Can I see him for a minute?"
"Yeah sure. He's in here"
I went inside and saw a man laying in the bed. He looked more dead then alive, but his eyes were open.
"Amelia" he whispered, as I entered.
"What?" I asked.
"Amelia. My baby. She's home alone"
"You have another kid?"
"Amelia. Girl. Thirteen years old. My baby girl. Home. Promise me you'll take care of her. Promise me she'll be okay. Promise?"
"I promise I'll do all I can do to help her. We'll go over there soon, okay? I just wanted to ask if you maybe remember what the shooter looked like?" I felt so bad asking him these kind of questions when he was dying, but it's part of my job.
"Amelia. Take care of her. She's alone. Promise me you'll make sure she's taken care of" he kept on saying.
"I promise I'll take care of her. Don't worry. I promise" I said. And I meant it.
I was gonna do all I could to help this girl. After a few minutes he closed his eyes and was gone.
I came out of the room and joined the rest of the police officers back to the station.
"I found out their information. It were Richard, Christina and Lucas Adams. They have another kid, Amelia. This is their address" Peter said.
"They're daughter is at home. We have to go tell her and see what we should do with her. She's only thirteen and can't stay there anymore" I said to the head officer.
"Yeah, we'll probably have to put her in foster care. Why don't you go over to their house and tell her and bring her here?"
"Why do I have to be the bearer of bad news?"
"Police orders. Now go!" he was stern.
I couldn't object, so I went.I knocked on the door and nobody opened. She was probably scared, since it was already dark outside.
"Open the door, please. Police orders" I said.
I heard shuffling and the door opened a crack.
A scared girl stood there."Good evening, can you please open the door a little more, so I can actually see you?" I asked.
She opened the door a little more."Are you Amelia Adams?"
"Yeah. How do you know?"
"I'm a police officer. We know more then you think"
"Did I do something wrong?" She asked.
"No, but unfortunately I have some bad news for you"
"My family, right?"
"How do you know?"
"Cause it can't be anything else and they should've been home already. What happened to them?"
"They died. All three of them" Tears came to my eyes, as I saw her go in shock mode.
She just stood there. She didn't say anything. She didn't move. She just stared into space."I'm gonna have to take you to the office with me, darling" I said.
She still didn't move, so I took her hand and she slowly followed me to the car."Imagine losing your whole family at the age of thirteen, so suddenly" I mumbled.
Me and Peter were assigned to take care of this case.
We found out that she had no other family. Only an old grandma, who was unable to take care of her.
We had to put her in foster care now, but it was too late to move her into a family, tonight. We were gonna have to do that tomorrow.
We were also gonna have to help her pack up their house and arrange the funeral."I'm gonna check on her. It's late, so I'm just taking her home today. I have enough room for her"
"Okay. I think that's good"
I stood up and walked to the room she was in. I saw her staring at the book shelf, as a lone tear rolled down her cheek.
The first one she shed since she heard the news.Oh poor girl. She thought she had to be brave and wasn't allowed to cry, cause the second she noticed me, she quickly wiped away her tear and put up her strong facade again.
"It's okay to cry, Amelia. It's not good to bottle up your emotions like that" I tried to reassure her.
She just shrugged. That's all she's done. She went mute. She didn't say a word. She just followed our orders and shrugged when we asked her something.
Oh poor girl. It'll be alright. We'll figure everything out for you.
I promised your dad I'll take care of you. I won't break that promise.-----
