Chapter 18

This whole week I have been mentally preparing to spend a day with Klaus. I should never have made that stupid joke but actions come with consequences. I dread the day before it even begins, at least Klaus didn't wake me up at nine in the morning. Who knew being with Elijah would come with so much work. I look once more at my phone and it read twelve-seventeen. I let out a sound of annoyance and exhaust, I already hate this. I look to the side of the bed and Elijah is no longer there so he must be downstairs already. I get out of my bed and go straight to the mirror, Thank God for these doppelganger genes or I would be hideous when I first wake up. When I finish getting ready, my phone reads one o'clock; I also take way too long to get ready and that was the short version. I go downstairs and it takes me a couple of rooms before I find everyone in the kitchen. I might as well just come into the kitchen everyday cause it seems this is just where they hang out. 

"And here I thought you guys had more pressing matters." I smile 

Elijah walks up to me and wraps his arm around my waist and places a kiss on my cheek. 

"Good Afternoon, Katerina. It's about time you woke up." He laughs 

"You could have done it you know. Anyway, I'm ready when you are Klaus." 

"Something actually came up with Marcel, I was just about to leave." 

"Okay, I guess I'll just hang with Elijah." I turn to him 

"Can't, I'm going with Niklaus. I love you." He gives me one more kiss and then he and Klaus are gone 

I turn back to Hayley and Rebekah and smile. "You guys have anything you're doing today?" I ask 

"Nope, Hails and I were going to play some board games. You can join if you'd like." She offers 

Sit at home and play board games with a pregnant lady and her blonde sidekick, go shopping, or follow Elijah and Klaus? What ever will I do? 

"Actually, I'm going shopping. Bye." I turn away but then Rebekah is in front of me 

"Let us come with you. We would prefer not to be here." She adds 

"I doubt you guys will want to come with me, I could shop in the same store for hours." 

Rebekah looks at me and squints her eyes. She examines me for a few moments before she puts her hand on her hip and looks into my eyes. 

"What are you REALLY doing?" She asks  

"I'm going shopping, I just said that." I chuckle awkwardly  

I start walking out the door but she grabs my wrist and I turn back to face her. She gives me this look and I just give in. 

"I'm going to follow your brothers, okay?" 

"Klaus will not take a liking to that. Plus they're already gone, who knows where they are." She states  

"I don't really care what Klaus likes and they're going to be at the compound." 

"How do you know that?" She asks 

"You are full of questions. I'm leaving now." 

"Let me come with you." She begs 

"Stay here with Hayley. Klaus can't punish me for following him but he can punish you, just let me do my thing." 

Without another word I grab my keys, purse, and I leave. I better drive quick before I get there and they're gone. Why in the world did Klaus want to live this far from the quarter? I'm sure he wants a strict watch over Marcel and his vampires. I finally get on the same street as the compound and park at the end of it. I walk down towards it and when I do I try to find a way to sneak in. I look up and smile, of course, open roof plan. I slowly go to the second belcony and hide behind an overgrown vine. I look down and I can see a couple of Marcel's vampires including Thierry. I look around some more and see that Marcel is in a heated argument with Klaus and Elijah. 

"Marcel, I'm tired of sounding like a broken record but..." 

"But what Klaus? What could you possibly say that would make me change my mind?" 

"It's obvious that your inner circle can't be trusted, after the stunt they pulled last night." Klaus adds 

"They thought an order came from me because someone told them I said it. The vampire responsible for these actions have been punished." 

I move a little closer so I can see what Elijah and Klaus's faces look like. By the look on Klaus's face I can tell that whatever plan he had, failed. 

"All I'm saying, Marcellus, is that if they are really trustworthy they would have known to go to you first."

"He's right, Marcel. These vampires have been under your rule for say, two-hundred years, they should know to follow orders given from only you." Elijah makes a good point 

"I already have it handled, it's not happening again, not that you need to worry about it. I'm sorry to have called you all this way for nothing." 

"Tsk, tsk, tsk, Marcellus. This is why I would make a better King than you, I would kill ANYONE who dare oppose me." Klaus just doesn't get it does he 

Elijah glances up in my direction and he squints his eyes, looking closer. I quickly move away so he doesn't see but I have a feeling that it's too late. Marcel are still arguing and don't notice when Elijah slips away and starts walking up the stairs. I move back and bump into person and whoever it was pulls me into a room and closes the door, covering my mouth with his hand. I listen as I hear Elijah walk by, stop, and then walk back down the stairs again. 

"What the hell Thierry?" I shout-whisper 

"Saving you from getting caught." He answers 

"I didn't need to be saved, he is my boyfriend. So what's this thing you were told to do my 'Marcel'?"  I air quote 

"A vampire named Steven told us that Marcel gave an order to teach the human faction that they should know better than to go up against him. Like idiots some of them actually believed it."  He explains 

"The power of Klaus. He compelled him to lie so Marcel could see that his little army couldn't be trusted." 

"That can't be, all of the vampires are on vervain since the originals came to town." He looks confused 

"Klaus has been known to drain vampire of vervain and then compel them, don't say it came from me, but tell Marcel that he needs to keep a closer eye on his vampires. Make sure everyone is accounted for and check daily for vervain in their systems." 

I go to turn away but Thierry grabs me by the wrist and turns me to him. 

"Why are you telling me this? Are you aware that Klaus will kill you if he finds out?" 

"I am. I got to leave before they see me." 

I leave the room and walk back to the overgrown vine and look back down at the three still talking. When I leave I don't notice that Klaus is behind me and when I turn around I bump into him. 

"Hello, Katherine."
