Mia returned home exhausted, emotionally drained and dirty. The door was unlocked, so she let herself in. It was still dark outside, but she guessed it was close to dawn. The house was silent, but the lights were on in the kitchen, and she could hear faint voices arguing.
"Dad?" she called out weakly as she entered the kitchen, recognizing her father's voice. She smiled bitterly, "Hey, you're finally back."
"Goddammit, Mia," his face fell at the sight of her. She braced herself for a lecture, or another punishment, but her dad pulled her into a hug instead. It was such a surprise that she froze before collapsing into his embrace, closing her eyes that were starting to fill with tears. "It's okay, you did so well. I'm so proud of you."
She guessed Kate had told him about her 'surprise test' after he came home and couldn't find her. Kate herself was perched against the kitchen counters, watching the two.
"Where's Billy and Chet?" she asked.
Mia broke the hug and turned to her aunt, the very sight of her making her shake with irritation. She ran a hand through her tangled hair, pulling out a few leaves in the process.
"Dead," she replied flatly.
The only emotion on Kate's face was annoyance. She huffed and crossed her arms, "You sure?"
"Yeah," she smiled sharply, "Doesn't feel good anymore, does it? Bet you expected me to bite it too."
"What happened?" Chris asked. There were already angry wrinkles between his eyebrows. Mia reveled in the fact that Kate was finally going to be chewed out.
"Those assholes left me tied up and hanging from a wire in the middle of the woods. Then the Alpha attacked them. I barely got out in time."
She skipped over the part where Derek helpe her, hoping that neither of them would catch on.
"They left you alone?"
"Yup. Kate's orders," she said, "I told them it'd be safer to do the test indoors, but they didn't listen."
Chris now turned to his sister, "Are you crazy?"
"What?" she argued back, defensive, "You were going too easy on her. I just wanted to give her a challenge."
"So you decided to incapacitate my daughter in the forest while we have an active Alpha on our hands?"
Kate shrugged, having the audacity to smirk at Mia, "She did it. She passed the test. What's the problem?"
"You're the problem," Mia replied and left the room, too tired to be a part of the upcoming argument. She was glad her dad knew, and that was enough.
She took a quick shower, washed off any evidence of tonight's traumatic events and changed into clean clothes. For the first time in a long time, she fell asleep immediately and slept until morning.
