"How was it?" Derek asked once she was back in the passenger seat of his Camaro, scanning her face for any injuries or heartbreak.

"It was okay," she replied, and that was mostly true. She didn't feel as upset anymore, but there was an emptiness slowly spreading through her body, a strange bleak feeling as she thought about Caroline more and more.

"She's very beautiful," Derek commented, gazing past her at the closed door of the little white house, "You look so alike."

Mia shook her head, the emptiness choking her a little, "It's not real."

"What?"

She focused her eyes on the random tree in front of them, "She's gorgeous and seems so kind, but she never married, never had kids, or any kind of partner or family. She lives alone and doesn't leave the house. I don't know, I just keep wondering if I'm going to end up the same way."

"Why would you?" Derek looked rightfully confused. "She didn't raise you."

"What if that's the curse of being like this? I mean, even I noticed it after I got bitten. It's like there's an aura that people get drawn to, but only on the surface. The siren charm, or whatever it is, makes me seem more beautiful and more interesting because that's the point of my power, to trick people."

"Okay, but–"

"And then what if that's what keeps everyone away? They're going to realise that it's an illusion, and I'm actually not that great of a person. Or worse, that's all people are ever going to see, this surface level beauty, and then they'll get bored and I'll end up alone just like her."

"You're spiraling," Derek sighed, shifting in his seat to face her, "Being alone, that was probably at least partially her choice. It doesn't mean it has to be yours. You already have friends, and your dad, and– people who love you. You're not alone."

She chuckled, turning to face him, "See, what if you're saying that because I've tricked you into thinking I'm just so amazing?"

"Trust me, you were charming, smart and kind even before your siren thing." he raised an eyebrow at her.

Mia shook her head at him, refusing to accept it. Derek barely knew of her existence before the bite. The only thing he knew her as was a hunter, his enemy out there to kill and torture him.

"Fine, you want me to embarrass myself?" he sighed again. His ears were turning red, and he couldn't look her in the eyes. It was a rare and adorable sight, and Mia bit back a smile. "The first time I saw you, I thought you were very beautiful, and it kind of took me by surprise. You were the person I was supposed to avoid and hate, but there I was, unable to look away."

"Please shut up," Mia covered her ears, feeling the heat radiating off her face. She probably looked insane by now, "I can't listen to it, stop."

Smirking at the fact that he wasn't the only one flustered, Derek continued,  "And yeah, maybe that's just my opinion, but that means you were attractive and interesting even before you were bitten."
