Mia didn't expect it, but Derek had agreed to go with her as soon as she proposed the idea. She said it on a whim, after the thought of traveling alone left her anxious. Or, rather, it wasn't the alone part that scared her, it was the destination - Caroline Rowe's address.
"At this point, we should just say it," Stiles said over the phone as Mia finished explaining what was happening, "She's your mom."
"She's a stranger," Mia replied, pausing, "Who might have birthed me, yes."
"Are you going alone? I can come with, if you want."
"I don't think your dad will agree with that," she said, pressing the phone between her shoulder and ear so she could finish packing her overnight bag. Among the clothes and toiletries, she threw in a gun, just in case.
"I think my dad wants me to get as far away from him as possible," Stiles sighed, "At least it's not as bad as Scott's mom. Or your family."
"Don't compare our misery," Mia said, "We can all be miserable together."
"Are you sure you're gonna be okay?"
"Derek's going with me, so physically I'll be fine. Emotionally, probably not," her phone chimed with a text from Derek. "Speak of the devil. I have to go. Good luck in therapy."
She could almost hear how hard Stiles rolled his eyes, "Don't remind me. And for the love of god, stay safe."
He hung up, and Mia pocketed her phone before descending down the stairs quietly. She didn't need to be so silent, it's not like Chris could stop her from following Victoria's dying orders, but it had become a habit to avoid this household like the plague.
Mia left her house and walked a few more blocks until Derek's sleek black car came to view. They exchanged hellos but nothing else, the air cold and strange between them again. It seemed that despite the few moments of intimacy and openness, it was still difficult for either of them to open up.
She should've seen it coming. Both of them had the emotional intelligence of a rock.
Mia put Caroline's address into the GPS system and they set off on their road trip. A third of the way through, Mia couldn't take the silence anymore. She racked her brain for an interesting topic, or a question that he wouldn't avoid.
"This is the second road trip we've taken," she finally said, feeling awkward at how flat the comment was.
Derek glanced at her briefly before refocusing on the road, "When was the first one?"
"When we went to the motel."
"Oh."
"I still get embarrassed thinking about it," she confessed, feeling her face heat up from the memories, "I completely lost my mind."
"You thought you were gonna die. Hell, I thought you were gonna die. It's normal," he replied.
"Thanks again, for all of that. I can't remember if I said thank you then."
