Mia sat in front of her mother, fidgeting anxiously, watching her clean her bite wound. Victoria was much calmer than her daughter, at least from the outside, keeping her elegant and cold aura even in the face of death.

"It's not that bad," her mother said, sensing her nervousness. "Don't act like you're not rejoicing right now, Amelia."

Mia clenched her jaw, meeting her eyes, "Why would you say that? I don't want you to die."

Victoria smirked bitterly, "But you're a little relieved about me dying, and even more relieved that you weren't the one to kill me."

"That's not true," she argued, "You're my mom."

For the first time since coming home, Victoria's face fell a little. Not enough to be drastic, but enough for Mia's eyes to catch the way her frown lines appeared on her forehead and the edges of her mouth.

Mia knew she wasn't going to get an explanation, so she tried a different route, "We don't know, for sure. I mean, that you're gonna turn."

"It's an alpha bite. We know."

"And you're fine with that?" Mia asked, refusing to believe her mother's stoicism. Even someone as heartless as her had to have some sort of survival instinct, an inherent, desperate need to stay alive.

Victoria looked up from her bite, pressing her mouth into a thin line, "I will follow the code."

Her expression revealed the hidden part of her sentence, the part where she still blamed Mia for not taking her own life, for running away and surviving the bite. Suddenly, Mia got struck with an idea, perking up in her chair.

"What if you won't turn? I didn't, and I'm still alive. Maybe it's genetic, and you'll be the same."

There it was, the same falter in her face.

"It can't be genetic," her mother said quietly, focusing on cleaning the blood off again.

"Why?" Mia asked, and got no response. "Why not?"

Victoria ignored her, "You can go, you don't have to sit with me. I need to discuss some things with your father, anyway."

Mia stood up to go, but still turned back, hesitating. She'd never wanted to hurt her mother the way Victoria had kept hurting her, over and over again, but she felt the need to say it.

"You know, part of me really wants you to live. And I know you'd rather die than turn into one of them, so it's your choice. But another part of me is kind of glad. You got what you deserved, and after what you did to Scott, I don't think I would be able to ever forgive you anyway."

With that, Mia went back upstairs to get ready to leave. The full moon was tonight, and she had promised to help Derek control his betas. Even with everything else going on, she had to be there to make sure none of them got out into town.
