"Call Scott."
"I'm trying–"
Mia dove into the pool, fighting the sting of chlorine in her eyes as she swam down to the bottom. Derek was floating, still like a statue, small bubbles coming out of his tightly closed mouth. She hooked her arms around his waist and pulled him up to the surface, gasping for air when they came up.
Mia wasn't physically weak - she trained almost daily, had some type of school sport incorporated into her extracurriculars for years, and could beat all of her dad's goons at arm wrestling. But Derek was all muscle mass and dead weight from the neck down, and she struggled to hold him up, already getting exhausted.
"Why are you so fucking–" she coughed, "Heavy–"
"I hardly think that's my fault–"
"Oh, right, because bench pressing buildings for fun isn't a choice, it's a gift."
"Stop insulting me," Derek replied, snarky as ever even as he spit up water, "Maybe you should work out more."
She scoffed, "Maybe I should just let you drown. Stiles? Assistance please?"
Stiles gave up on the phone and crawled over to the edge, glancing around the room. "I don't see it. Here," he extended his hand for Mia, who began dragging Derek back to land.
"Wait, stop, stop!" Derek exclaimed, and they saw the creature crawling around the pool. It wasn't attacking them, just hissing at the water.
"What's it waiting for?" Stiles asked.
They watched intensely as the creature reached out into the water, then hissed and recoiled its hand like it had gotten burnt.
"It can't go in the water. It can't swim," Mia said quietly.
The creature turned to stare at them. It observed the two bodies in the water, then set its eyes on Stiles. In a split second, it began charging at the boy who was still on the ground. Panicked, Mia let go of Derek and rowed the remaining distance to the edge. She grabbed Stiles by his tracksuit and yanked him into the pool just as the creature zipped past him, its claws barely missing the boy.
Stiles face-planted into the water with a yelp, but rose up quickly. They looked at each other for a second, and then dove to get Derek back up to the surface again. They each grabbed one of his arms and put them around their shoulders.
"I will kill both of you," Derek hissed when he could breathe again, shaking his soaked hair away from his face. With Stiles taking some of the weight, it was easier to stay afloat, but now that the creature was circling them, Mia had no idea how long they could stay up like this.
"Wait," she got an idea, zoning in on the creature, "Let me try something. Maybe I can buy us some time."
She focused, her eyes lighting up in the familiar glow. It was hard to target a thing that had no human features. She concentrated, and for a moment, it seemed to work, the creature stilling. But its eyes remained the same puke yellow, and it hissed at her attempt at charming it.
