Despite the horrific events of last night, Mia still had to wake up and go to school the next day as if everything was alright. She had started opting out of their family breakfast, grabbing whatever she could find in the kitchen and dashing out the door before Gerard could convince her to stay. The last thing she wanted was to spend any time with him, and she didn't trust herself to flawlessly hide all of the secrets weighing her down.

Stiles caught her right at the school gates, his usual anxious energy even more heightened. Mia had started associating his appearances with bad news, and she wondered if she could have one regular hangout with the boy without it turning into a disaster.

"I have some terrible, horrible news," Stiles said, and Mia smiled to herself, confirming her thoughts once again.

"Of course," she sighed, but let him go on.

"I talked to my dad, who talked to Jackson, and apparently–"

"Morning, Mia," Isaac interrupted the boy as he walked past them, bumping the girl gently on the shoulder. Mia and Stiles froze in the middle of the hallway, watching the new beta strut away like he owned the place.

"They released him?" she asked, even though the answer was obvious.

Stiles gestured in Isaac's general direction with a sigh, "Yup. That's the news."

"Great," Mia didn't necessarily believe Isaac had killed his father, but she also didn't fully believe that he wasn't incapable of hurting someone else, accidentally or not. Derek's betas were getting rowdier and more reckless by the day, and having Isaac locked behind bars would've made at least some of their problems easier.

"Okay, moving on to our next crisis," Stiles continued as they started walking again, "Any luck with the Kanima thing?"

"I can't even take a shower without Gerard interrogating me about it," she rolled her eyes, "If I try to translate the bestiary, he'll find out. I'll keep trying though."

"You might wanna speed it up. Derek gave Jackson the venom to see if he's the Kanima, and he passed with flying colors. From what we've gathered, Lydia is their next target."

"They're going to paralyse Lydia?" she frowned.

Stiles nodded bitterly, "Or kill her. Whichever option is the most convenient."

The bell rang, signaling the start of class. They shuffled awkwardly for a moment, unable to offer a solution, then decided to meet up later and figure out a proper plan. Mia went to her first class of the day, already feeling antsy for it to end. She was the only one who wasn't in the same class as Lydia, Erica, Isaac or the others, so she could only guess what was happening there.

As classes ended and the school began to empty out, Mia couldn't see any of her friends among the crowd. She waited impatiently in the main hall, but no one showed up. Allison had texted her something vague about how their best plan right now would just be to protect Lydia, but Mia couldn't see where Lydia went either.
