Mia couldn't stay awake long enough to find out the sheriff's verdict. As soon as she touched Stiles' bed, she was out like a light, exhaustion replacing the adrenaline from before. Fortunately, neither of the Stilinskis forced her awake and kicked her out. They must've thought she needed sleep, because when she woke up, it was already noon.
When the girl climbed downstairs, the sheriff was standing in the kitchen, his uniform already on, making coffee to go.
"Good morning," he said, cautiously looking at her. To him, she looked like a captured, feral animal. "How are you feeling?"
"Thank you for letting me stay," she dodged the question easily, keeping her distance from Stiles' dad. He seemed like a good man, but she was afraid he had called her parents.
"Amelia," Stilinski sighed, turning to face her fully. He was choosing his words carefully, "Are you in trouble? Is that why you came here?"
"What?" she tried to laugh, but all that came out was a quiet wheeze, "No. No, I–"
"Did someone hurt you?"
Yes, yes, please help me, I'm so scared–
"No, sir," she smiled, "I really did have to tutor Stiles. He left some notes at my house for today's test, so I rushed here to give them to him before school."
She could tell the sheriff still didn't quite believe her. After all, people didn't come to your house at 4 am looking like they've been hit by a bus. But the man gave in for now, nodding at her.
"Okay. If there's ever something, you can tell me. Stiles trusts you, so you can trust me."
"Thank you," she muttered. She racked her brain for an excuse to stay here for the day, but Stiles' dad grabbed his things and made his way to the front door.
"Feel free to take whatever you want from the fridge. The extra keys are in that bowl, lock the door when you leave. You can give the keys back to Stiles later."
Then he was gone.
Mia let out a sigh of relief, slumping against the stairs. She couldn't believe the sheriff trusted her enough to leave her alone in his own house. That bein said, she didn't want to waste any more time. She needed a plan.
After grabbing a banana from the kitchen, she went back to Stiles' room. As she ate absentmindedly, trying to forge an escape plan, her eyes caught on a piece of paper placed at Stiles' desk. Before, she was in a rush and missed it.
'mia, i had to go to school but i hope you're okay. i convinced dad to let you stay. he's worried, but he's not gonna do anything. you HAVE to tell me everything when i get back home'
She glanced at the clock beside Stiles' bed. She had a good few hours before school finished. That was enough time to find the person she was looking for.
